Hi Flying Finn, is your OBD2 cat still for sale?

Thanks,

Default X Pipes and 200 cell cats..

First, In January, I passed California smog with Fabspeeb 200 cell cats and X pipes. Second, even with stock 993 mufflers (I need them to assure me of making 92dB or < at Laguna Seca), the car sounds great. I'f like to have louder muffs, but blow sound 2X at Laguna Seca and they send you home.

BTW, this was a Monday event at Laguna Seca conducted by Northern California Racing Club. Next they are at Buttonwillow end of March, Thunderhill in April. They don't advertise; all word of mouth.

Yesterday was one of the times I wished I had my camera turned on in the car. At Laguna Seca, I was chasing a Nissan GTR (550+HP) and a 500+ HP Corvette around the track. They would blow me away down the front straight, but by the time we came all the way around to the left hander on to the front straight (Turn 11), I had caught up to them with my 3,200 Lb., stock motor and tranny, street legal, 97 Carrera. Broke into the 1:44s during the day with a 1:44.307....so close to a 1:43. I was running 10 heat cycled Hoosiers....it must have been the X pipes and 200 cell cats. Well it could have been!

Default Cat replacement

+1 on the FabSpeed set up.

I'm in the process of replacing the old cat with the 200 cell sports and other than a couple of stubborn nuts and bolts its an easy DIY. Also, the original cat is a nasty, heavy part that I would not put back on the car. FYI, some early 96's (mine) run Bischoff so you need to check the the flange or heat exchanger stamping....

Go all the way down the slope-100 cells. It performs great and the sound will
make you want to drive more!

Awesome!

I also have sport cats + stock muffs. I don't track my car, but I love the sound. Some of the gutted mufflers sound too V8-ish to me.

Anyone know if it's possible to cut open the stock cat and replace with newer 100-cell innards?

^^^ I'm thinking of doing something similar... Using the flanges off my original cat to make my own 100 cell cats.

200 cell catalytic converters are 95% open as compared to a straight open pipe and very stable and do NOT typically unravel and blow out. 100 cell catalytic converters are 98% open and typically fail and do NOT keep off OBD2 CEL lights and the 3% delta is insignificant in terms of additional power and sports car sound.

I found this all out by observation and dyno testing and talking to engineers at HJS Germany. A gentlemen that runs the Motorsports and aftermarket departments of HJS catalytic converters says that consumers THINK that 100 CPSI is better than 200 CPSI and it is actually the opposite given the failures and problems with emissions.

Heck- I can buy 50 cell and 75 cell catalytic converters and I am offered these from time to time. No thanks.

FYI- I used to buy 100 cell catalytic converters from another company in Europe and this European company used to Cross-Drill and Weld in catalytic converter strenthening rods 90 degrees perpendiculra to the 100 CPSI core. The cats looked like 6 #2 pencils were drilled through the core and welded on the sides of the catalytic converter case.
The company did this so that the cats would NOT collapse internally and unravel.

HJS said flow was 75% compared to an open pipe and much degraded versus a 200 cell quality catalytic converter. If you see or feel bumps or see rods crossdrilled or welded to a 100 cell catalytic converter ............you have 100 cell cats with very poor exhaust flow. Bottom line 100 cell cats are NOT the Holy GRail under any circumstances.

Default Gillett VS Bishoff

We see above, "FYI, some early 96's (mine) run Bischoff so you need to check the the flange or heat exchanger stamping." Pic below from the FVD catalogue.

BTW, just back from Laguna Seca...Passed 92 dB sound with flying colors...Fabspeed 200 cell cats, Fabspeed X pipes and stock 993 mufflers from FD Motorsports.

After reading the beginning of this thread, I took the plunge and ordered the Fabspeed Cat/pipe arrangement for our MY98 coupe - FedEx say's its in the wind, can't wait.
15 years, 80k something miles and the 1990s technology were both signals to renew the exhaust system. When removing the OE Cat during the LPMM mod fabrication, couldn't help but notice the OE Cats weight; Heavy..
Sport Cat's for the coupe ...... Varooom.

Default Weight of stock cat...

...about 30 Lbs as I recall...less the weight of the X pipes and 200 cell cats..you will lose some weight, as well as displace some weight further forward toward the center of gravity.

As I recall, I saw 15 HP and about an equal amount of torque from the conversion, and with the exhaust going into FD Motorsports Stage II muffs.

I weighted the stock cat on a digital scale once. 24 pounds.

So you'll have 200 cell cats and LPMMs? That's going to sound great. Post a sound clip for us when you get it all installed. I like your logic; in my case, 16 years and 160+K is enough for one cat...
