ALthough it's unexpected and definitely impacts the wallet. It's relatively good news and shouldn't shake your confidence (or anyone else's) that the motor is virtually bulletproof.

Many years of enjoyment ahead!!

I am having a tough few weeks of ownership with this car. Hope the rough parts are largely over. I owned an 87' with similar mileage for three years and all I had to do was change the oil. I think I was spoiled by the 3.2. I know I miss the exhaust note on that car.

Anyway, I forgot to take a photo of the starter bindex housing. It was literally sliced in half, the top half-cone housing was split. No one told me you had to pull the motor on a tip to get to the starter. The most expensive starter I have ever replaced for sure. Big difference from swapping an $85 starter out on my Jeep CJ7.

I did get to take a good look at the car in the air while it was at the shop. I was very pleased with the condition. Glad its over and hopefully it will be a long time before anything else goes wrong!

A small bump in the road. Once you get some trouble-free miles under your belt you'll really start enjoying her and you won't think as much about your '87. I went from an '87 to a '95 993. I love my 993. I run Fister Stage IIs and I think the sound is way better than my 3.2.

Just received my starter. Interesting, there is no bendix housing.

That is interesting. Shop said the replacement starter was indeed a different version than the old one that broke. He said part # was the same but that Bosch may have just "updated" the starter. I wonder if we put the right one in? It works, I know that much. Hmmmm.

A pretty penny if an engine drop was required.

Just looking back at my old post. For anyone interested it was $2,200. It cost almost that much to ship it from Southern California.

Yeah, it blew after having the car for only a few weeks subsequent to PPI.

A friend of mine bought an 87k mile E30 M3. It was minty, and he had a PPI done. That didn't stop it from spinning a rod bearing inside 150 miles. It could be worse!

Glad to hear the damage wasn't too bad. I just had my starter replaced in September. Total bill was ~$1100 but I had some additional work done, and I got a rebuilt starter from Pelican (not included in the bill). The work was done by the dealer.
