Seems to me if there's a physical obstruction, it's not too hard to pull a spark plug from each cyl and then turn the motor over by hand to try to get a feel for it -- maybe even listen with a stethoscope to try to locate the "clunk." That is, unless the motor is completely seized.

It could be hydro locked from a leaking fuel injector...in which case removing the spark plugs would reveal it.

Tried not to speculate...but couldn't help myself! I hope it turns out OK for you!

Thanks to all. This truly stinks. This is why any new buyer should have a 5k reserve set aside.

"Trophy" may have it, spoke to mechanic this afternoon, said everything looked good inside chain boxes. He thinks its the torque converter. As engine came out to do chain boxes, maybe didn't get put back together correctly? Not sure. His inspection will continue Monday morning.

We agreed this is good news. Not that any if this is "good" but could be worse apparently.

Will know more Monday.

I'll also chime in here and say very sorry to hear about this, and this is definitely not something a three week old owner should experience.

Hang in there, and work it out, as it appears you are doing. Good luck and please keep us posted.

Thanks again to all. Spoke to shop yesterday, said it was the starter binding the engine. Appeared as if it broke apart or something. This is a tip car. Said this was "good news". Said the transmission should not be damaged. Thought it was a matter of trying to figure out why it happened, to recover all lost pieces from the starter assembly and replace or rebuild any damaged parts. It is going very slow, but I guess this is good news. I still have not heard of this happening to anyone else with one of these cars. The engine was out with the PO in March, so maybe they didn't get it all back together correctly? Who knows. It did not give any warning signs of any mechanical problems prior to locking up.

Good news indeed. When I bought my 993 in December, I had a PPI and then wound up having to do a full top-end rebuild to the tune of $11k. And I was without the car for a total of 7 weeks. Just remember, things can always be worse.

Good they have found what the issue is.

When they pull it out just make sure they check for damage around the engine case. For it to stop the engine the pieces would have been caught between the ring gear and the engine case (to lock up).

There are a number of supporting ribs at the back of the case that could/would catch any debris and stall the engine.

That's relatively good news.

How sure are you the engine locked up? Engines can make sounds that sound violent to some people...Dont assume the worst...see what your wrench comes back with... -good luck

So maybe what happened is the bendix did not retract when the engine started which then probably got ripped up. Glad I ordered a new starter.
