Just had it done for 170 at a local indie (first change since ownership). I've done my other cars but was worried about where I'd be draining 10 qts to, etc, no lift, etc. I may tackle it myself next time but just didn't have the time.

I would also recommend that if you're near your 30,000 or 60,000 mile interval to consider doing your minor or major maintenance also during this time.

wow, I guess I'm lucky to have a good friend that owns and operates his own indie shop out here in the Bay Area. I've been going to him for every oil change with the 993 and with about 10-11qts. of Amsoil Synthetic and two OE filters, it comes out at just about $120.

Default On the high end

Yesterday, I asked my local independent Porsche shop (Twin cities, MN) for an oil change estimate since I was on the phone with them getting quotes for other stuff.

They charge 1.5 hours of labor at $110/hour, plus oil, filters, fees, etc.
Roughly $300.

Outrageous. Now I'm getting serious about doing this myself.

you have this forum, its community of very knowledgeable, giving and caring members, doing your own oil change is something that is absolutely within reach.

after materials, your looking at saving $200+...

Absolutely. Two things I'm fighting right now are the 35 F temp in the garage and protecting against an oil gusher.

This forum has helped immensely over my first year of 993 ownership. Oil fan and A/C fan resistors, new front brake pads and rotors, emergency brake adjustment, brake and clutch slave bleeding, clutch slave lubrication.

And the entertainment value cannot be overlooked.

Just had it changed this week for $180 at a local indie in Raleigh. They switched from Pentosin 5w-40 to Liqui Moly 5W-40. Anybody have any experience with the Liqui Molly oil? I have used their injector cleaners in other German cars but I have no experience with their oils.

Since you change the oil with the car warm, the engine will warm up the garage

I'm not sure if the NA cars are different, but the gusher problem is a bit overstated in my experience.

one of those (with center pin removed and vent open), and some halfway intelligent placement and you won't spill more than a few drops.

This is backwards to me. In the past independents had charged as much as $300, last time I took my C4S into the dealership on the west side of town they charged $200 and gave me a Panamera loaner for the day.
