Firstly thanks everyone who gave advice for my road trip from Los Angeles to NYC. I am currently on the road and the car is performing wonderfully (touch wood) La to Utah was crazy hot but the engine stayed pretty cool. Colorado was fun but for one scary rain storm ( curvy road, big trucks and aqua planning not a fun combo)
Now here is the question. I have been using 6th gear at times but it feels like the engine is working too hard if the revs are below 3000 and over 3000 is 90+ mph. Is it safe to cruise along on flat(ish) roads with revs 2500-3000? Am I staining the engine more than 5th at 3400?

Too low, basically is 2500-3000rpm too low to use 6 th gear in.

too low would be under 2000rpms... not 3,000rpms from my experience...

6th gear at 2200 rpm is fine for no-load driving (flat road, not attempting to pass... just cruising). If you start an incline or want to accelerate, grab a lower gear or two.

I've found the same thing. On a long trip, 6th gear is best for mileage, but, in 5th it seems to be in it's sweet spot.

I had a Porsche mechanic tell me these engines are OK from 2500-3000. Not like the older ones where you needed to keep the revs up.

I find I hardly ever use 6th...maybe on a long, flat freeway run, but otherwise I
stay between 4th and 5th (speed limit here is max 60mph so 6th is useless)

I've made that trip several times to the West coast from CT and to the East coast from CA.

The only time I found 6th gear useful is across KS and into MS when I took the Northern States and in East TX when I stayed South.

Get off the Interstate whenever you can and find indirect routes on country roads....it'll take a lot more time and gas to cross the country, but you'll have many more great memories of the trip.

Cruising on flat(ish) roads at 2500-3000 rpm on 6th gear is fine.
Under 2500 rpm and you're getting to the point of lugging the engine, personally I don't drive under 2500 rpm unless I'm on 1st or maybe some times on 2nd.

I always thought the G50/20 6th was way too tall. IMHO anything over 75 - 80 mph/2800 - 3000 rpm while cruising is fine. Forget about acceleration.
