OBD II performance data on your Android or iPhone
Picked up one of these at $18: http://amzn.to/Q7CVm9 , which works really well with the Torque app on Android. It's crazy cheap and works well on my 97 993.
I can log all sorts of parameters, match it with race or trip geodata, clear CEL if needed, etc. It's really pretty powerful. With Torque, you can make custom dashboards that are as many screens filled with different metrics, rendered with different controls. You can share & email your data, including your CEL type readings.
On iPhone, you can use: http://amzn.to/N5s02i and the following app: http://bit.ly/N5wwOj. A bit more expensive but pretty great as well.
Of course this is not limited to our 993 and can be used with most cars past 96?

I have one of these without Bluetooth. ELM327 chipset is a well tried inexpensive and good solution for OBD2 reading. Works pretty well... except I don't own a single car with OBD2 any longer.

Hello ferik,
I just got the "super mini" bluetooth ELM327 OBD2 diagnostic scanner off of eBay for $9 shipped. It usually sells for a bit more, I got lucky. This app does work with the torque application (by Ian Hawkins) and so far I was able to clear check engine light with it. I'm still learning this tool. Are you able to do anything else with it?

Torque now has a plugin that will let you film the autocross/track event from within your car, superimposing your OBD-II parameters (engine revs, Gs, ...). Pretty nifty.

I installed both Rev and Dashcommand and paired it with my ELM WiFi unit from EBay.
Both app's can only read speed, revs and a few other parameters (PIDs) so it's pretty much useless for car-analysis.
However it's fun as a toy, good for track-day-enthusiasts and it surprised me that it can read car-voltage.
It reads my OBDII-codes (none found) and there is a 'reset codes' feature so maybe it will come in handy at a later time.

I wasn't expecting much, I was just curious to test it out. I will test it on a friends 996 tomorrow, it will be interesting to see if the later cars feeds more data to the OBD2.
Can you read the O2 values, lambda sensor, torque/power or such with the android app? and what is your main purpose with the tool?
I am curious if the error code readings can be trusted? I didn't expect to have any errors as my engine was rebuild less than 3.000 km's ago, but since it can't read anything from the engine I'm not confident it would see all codes?

I believe I can read torque info yes. It's been really useful to me in autocross, understanding what's happening to the car during a go. It logs everything, plots it on the 'track' and I can record the video.
I've cleared CEL warnings before. It's useful to get the code but it won't come back with the Porsche label for it. Google is your friend in this case.
Before I had a ScanGauge II (http://amzn.to/QmN6GZ) I also used it to record my MPG, display miles to empty & other parameters. For this, the ScanGauge is now much better because the display is always there in every day situations.

Thanks for the tip on this cool little toy ferik! I needed to check my codes and rediness flags for my smog test on my 97 c2 Tiptronic, 105,000 mi, and it works great and I was able to get my smog certificate this morning no problems. this makes having an OBD2 car fun.

For sure, I always have something plugged into that port, be it a ScanGauge (http://amzn.to/1bSUZ4R) or the BT ODBC widget.
