Got an '95 993 tiptronic. Transmission is working very smooth but when playing with the throttle, I hear a lot of clunk clunk noises coming from the transmission or differential, hard to tell. Dealer is telling me to rebuild the tiptronic transmission. No need to tell me but I belive that full rebuild is not needed, only repair. Could it be too much play in the differential gears or the 180 degrees return axle/ gears to differential? Does anyone experienced this as well? Or any insight were to look for when opening the tiptronic?

I would just try servicing the gearbox and dif with new fluid and a filter.
Try using 6 quarts of ZF Lifeguard5 in the gearbox with an OEM filter. ZF makes the transmission in the 993--contrary to popular belief it was not a mercedes unit until the 996.
The dif holds about .75qts of 75-90wt synthetic NON LSD nfluid (unless you have an LSD).
You will need a brake bleeder or will need to fabricate a fill unit of some kind--but that should be easy if you are so inclined to do this project yourself.
I believe the ZF unit used in our 993 Tip's is very similar to the ones BMW installed around the same time. It maybe helpful to speak with an experienced BMW technician as they should be more familiar with the ZF tranny in question.Just a suggestion.
Filter and oil has been changed up to factory spec. When changed, pan magnet and old oil was clean. The noise is defenately mechanical. Correct that the ZF tranny is used at BMW, Jaguar, Volvo (ZF-4HP22) but Porsche (ZF-4HP22HL) has the additional 180 degrees return axle and gears to diff. which I suspect so I hope on a ZF tiptronic expert opinion
