Spencer is gone but Shasta design is still in Lakeshead @ Shasta Lake. However if you were to pose this question to the 912 BBS there would be an overwhelming response for John Benton in La Habra (North Orange County)

An the comment above is correct, an early 912 is a WAY different beast than a 993... done both and lived to tell about it!

You should see the work he did on a complete restoration of a 73RS....absolutely stunning. His attention to detail is beyond reproach IMO.

He did the top-end on my car and I did not have to come back to him for one single thing done incorrectly or problematic. Considering that the motor was completely stripped down all the way as far as it can go without cracking the case in half, I'd say he's not bad. Although admittedly, I didn't ask if he had any nuts or screws left over when the job was done.

Is he the "best"? Thats subjective, but I have the Premier AAA card specifically so I can send my car out to him on a flatbed several times a year for maintenance. Nobody else touches my ride. He's pretty much all about the air-cooled cars, and has a machine shop in the back to boot.

Lets just say that you could make a worse choice of shops to send your business. Nuff said.

My gut tells me that a rebuilder who does Porsche engines on a regular basis it a boutique kind'a operation who lives by his reputation. The real question might be has anyone had a bad outcome with a particular rebuilder? My gut tells me that working with a shop that sends the engine out for a rebuild may not be the best way to go.

There are some great shops noted, but also as noted, the 4 cyl is a bit different, heed the advice.

But, whoever mentioned cam timing on the 6 cyl as being some overly complicated endeavor... I'm not sure what that is about.

Jack Staggs has a good rep with the 356 crowd.

Funny how a thread can sit for 6 months, and then people just start posting again.
