When you come to a stop and wait for the light to change do you keep the clutch down or engage it once the light turns green??
Not only should you put the car in neutral and release the clutch (saves the throw-out bearing), but just before you get the green light, engage 5th or 6th gear
before you engage 1st (stops the spinning gear sets and saves your 1st gear synchro).
Best practice is to shift into neutral while waiting and shifting into first when the light turns green. Less wear.
+1. I always do this. Also, don't start the car by pressing in the clutch. I have a label above my key switch that says "No clutch!" to remind my mechanics as well as myself.
technically the best thing would be to turn off your car.. warm starts don't hurt your car at all.. you just waste gas waiting for the light (and complaining about gas prices)
wow, never knew all these clutch tips!?!? Drove my Beetle for 13 years by keeping the clutch down (in gear) as I wait for the light to change and starting it in gear with the clutch down. If you start it in neutral don't you have to take it out of gear anyway?
I just stay in 1st gear at all times, and just shut down at stops (I have a '95 so I can start it in gear as well); top speed is a bit limited, it uses a lot of gas and it might be a little rough on the engine but it's easier on the clutch that way.
