Default I'm a Subaru Outback owner---WTF is up with oil debates?

Funny....owning my 2nd Subaru Outback in the past 12 months, the same pissing matches go on about oil in the Outback world.

http://www.subaruoutback.org/forums/...life-span.html

My grandpa turns 91 and has been drinking tap water his entire life. Im quite sure he could still knock out my teeth with a good, right punch.

Makes you wonder?

Ha! I work for one of the major global brands of motor oil and always find it amusing to hear the rationale from one brand over another. As a result of recent NA spec changes the minor differences in brand are getting smaller and smaller with each passing year.

My 35 year old Bronco runs great and I couldnt even tell you what oil goes in it off the top of my head. All I do is have it changed it when it needs to be changed and go with a synthetic blend. Think its Valoline.

Bronco forum is a relaxed group of people. I dont think I have read an oil topic yet.

I'm also a new Outback owner. I'm using the oil recommended in the owners manual and will be changing every 3000 miles (even it I could go longer). I considered using synthetic, but decided even the new dino oils are so much more improved.

The oil debates are surely overblown. But I will say that for the aircooled p-cars there is some merit to the discussion. The oil is not only a lubricant, it is also the engine coolant. The higher cylinder head temps and the flat tappet valve train also require additional lubricity not needed in more modern street cars. With the elimination of the additive zddp from current oils we need to be concerned.

I have an 07 impreza... I do mobil 1 5-30 once a year, probably get 8-12k on it. Plus I add at least a few quarts of oil between changes, they like to burn it.

Subaru (at least for the 2012's and 2013 Outbacks) is using synthetic and recommending the 1st chance at 7500 miles or 3 months and there after every 7500 miles or 7.5 months. However, seems the dealerships are recommending doing the 1st oil change at 3 months or 3000 miles, which I will do. Thereafter, every 7500 miles....while some say 3000, others 3750, others 5000. Most dealerships will probably say 3000 miles, even with synthetic. Obviously, driving conditions may play a part of intervals--towing, ect.

The manufacture spends hundreds of millions on research and development, the dealer nothing. I'll probably stick with the manufactures 7500 miles with synthetic.

Yes, the brief 3k mi interval for oil/ filter service on the 2.5 turbo (MY05 Outback XT) is a pain and expensive in the long run. Our OB XT recently turned 75k miles and I think back on buying the first 12 pack of Subaru oil filters; tiny those filters. Always used the factory spec'd 5-30w Dino oil type though....

As an aside...
Check out the Japan Domestic Market sourced Bilstein BTS suspension modifacation thread over on the www.legacygt.com site. The fitting is for the USA MY05 to 09 Outback wagons. Once installed you'll think of the OB XT wagon as a poor mans Audi S4 wagon however with Subaru reliablity. Kind-of....

Next: the brakes !

Count yourself lucky.

On another forum, they'll go on and on about oil and then go out and buy the cheapest oil filter they can find.

Because Japanese cars do not have as much... ummm... character as German cars, the owners have to find something more mundane to argue about.

I'm sure there's a post on Outback World within 12 month entitled: "I don't understand why Porsche owners always discuss oil leaks". If there isn't there should be.

I work for Idemitsu, the manufacturer of the service fill for Subaru. Nippon is the factory fill. Switch to Idemitsu. We are the genuine OEM oil supplier to the dealer network. If you go to the dealer and buy Subaru Genuine you are buying the OEM approved oil and ATF. The Idemitsu product is a far superior product and will maximize your engine life.
