I was always surprised when the engine was finally up to proper temp that the stick would measure right. This is one of those few things I still remember vividly while owning the car. Its like I kept sitting there thinking no it won't be correct, and blam the reading came out right before and after oil changes.

Talking Quick follow up

Ended up being kinda low on oil. I added a little bit over a qt. before it started registering on the gauge. I did,as suggested, watched the gauge as I slowly added oil. Sure enough the former unfunctioning gauge started functioning again. Now the needle is mabe a 1/4" above the red zone on the gauge and the stick clearly shows the level just short of midway in the twisted part of the stick. Thanks again fellow Rennlister's for helping a NOOB to learn about this car I have become somewhat obsessed with.

Glad it worked out...

But I'd say your still low on oil. The needle should be at the little white square at the top.

I'd not tell him that, lest he overfills. Maybe yours is, but the calibration of each gauge sender will not be the same. My gauge never reads at or near the top of the scale, when I'm mid-way on the stick.

If he's got it on the middle of the stick, in the twisted portion when it's at operating temp, he is not low on oil.

Many on this forum would say that is on the high side and that oil consumption is greater when filled to that level.

My experience has been otherwise though. Last week, I checked the needle position on my oil level gauge and compared it to what my actual oil level is on my dipstick. This after 20 seconds of idling and parked on a level surface.

My oil gauge indication was one needle-width under the white max line and the oil level on my dipstick was at the top end of the spiral.

As for oil consumption at this level, its been like that since my last oil change, so my oil consumption, if at all, is negligible.

Quick question: What is the ballpark cost to replace the sending unit for the oil guage level? Just had the oil changed at a very reputable shop up here. Dipstick is perfect but gauge shows 1 small tick above the red zone. Should i even bother with the cost as I check manually on a very regular basis?

i think there is a way of bending the guage to get more accurate readings.. next time i have the rear apart i might take a look.. search the forums for more details.

If you overfill (added 10 quarts + 2 new filters and am getting slightly high on dipstick and needle--about 2 weeks ago), could that be enough to now be having both rough idle as well as a "new today, yeah" CEL? (am having trouble getting Tore's OBD to work on DME, works everywhere else, so I can't read the fault.)

Interesting that someone said 10w-40 is too thin for 993. I just had my oil changed and they put in
0W-40. Car seems to run well but I will see if it makes any difference to oil consumption or leakage.

I am not noticing oil consumption when it reads on the lower half of the twist on the dipstick...

My gauge does not seem to register all the time. Dipstick says its good, gauge does not register. Some days it will bounce up. Other days it stays in the red.

I'm running 0-40 as well. Porsche of stratham NH recommended it.
