Where did I leave square one...I know it's around here somewhere.

All kidding aside Oomsung...If you compare Barry Manilow to The Rolling Stones you might know the answer to your questions. Alright, maybe not Barry Manilow...but The Bee Gees perhaps.

The 996 is a wonderful car in many ways. It is smooth, comfortable and bigger than the 993.
The 993 is more elemental...a mix of old school mechanical sound and feel mixed with a degree of sophisticated sports car.

Grand tourer vs. Sports car may help.

Do your research by spending time on htis forum and reading lots of different threads. The 993 can be a great dailyt driver but you may like the 996 better for that role. Good luck.

Oh, one more thing. Drive them both and you will probably know the answer right away.

I owned an out of warranty 996. Great car. Lots of fun to drive. Had the LN Eng. IMS upgrade, new RMS. But with the M96 power plant I always felt I was driving a "ticking time bomb"( D-chunk). So I traded for a BMW 135i vert. Great car but no emotional connection like I had with the Porsche. So Here I am back in the family with my emotions again intact.

Not having tested a 996, I should not post this BUT the 993 is a pasion. 993 is a mechanical driving machine and from my point of view is the last one that came out from the factory that relates to Porsche basics.
911- 996 is the first of the water cooled and added electronic features that set some of the new era. cool, but not the "real thing" . ....and you may look into the 993 for the reason that it will give you a less loss in value over time.

Have owned both, currently 9934S. As others have said , both great cars.

Amazing the deals out there for 996's, and beginning to see 997 prices getting quite reasonable.

Let me know if you're interested, a friend in my neighborhood is selling his VERY clean 996.

996 turbo if 996 is decision....no issues with the IMS failures.......or a GT 3

Or 993 turbo...........or 993 2S...or 4S...or if you must have a cab...........a 993.........

Stay away from 996s except for turbo/GTs...the turbo/GTs have a different engine design ( edited to add GT 3.....forgot)

All 911 variants have their issues but the 996's with their tendency to implode motors at any given moment coupled with the looks would keep me away.

996 GT3...Very comparably priced to a low mileage 993 C2 or C2S. Between the two, 996 GT3 is much faster and more involving experience. If you can stand the looks, 6GT3 would be my choice.

The 996 GT3 is the only NA 996 to own.It has the good,993 derived, engine that does not suffer IMS or any of the other problems the 996 is known for.

^^^ oh yeah, and at around $50k, I think the 6GT3 is done in depreciation...great deal IMO. It's a more pure experience than that of a 7GT3.
