If that doesn't motivate you to drive your car I don't know what will. Awsome!

Nice! I often quote your story and mileage when friends ask me if I drive the 993 year round (nope) because they assume it is a fragile car. Always great to read your updates.

With that mileage, it goes to show how prematurely most of us change our oil. A co-worker has been changing his oil on his 2001 BMW 330 Ci every 15,000 miles since new.

Rich, since you've basically owned this car from day-one, how many top end / valve guide jobs have you performed in those 285,000 miles?

I was wondering how the paint could look so good, but then noticed that you've had it painted...looks new in the pics!

None. No major engine work yet.

The paint never looked bad. After the first collision the car got new sheet metal (and plastic) from the fenders on back and the hood had a dent and needed repainting also so the just did the whole car. That was ~89,000 miles. After the next 150,000 miles or so the paint still looked good except for the front fascia which was beat up. The hood and front fenders had chips, lots of chips. The rocker panels and the flared rear fenders also had taken a beating. I replaced the front fascia last spring and then a couple of weeks later was hit in the rear, knocking me into the car in front of me. This destroyed the front and rear bumper covers and dented the front fenders. Everything needed to be painted except the doors and the hood, so for a few dollars more I had everything done.

Now that makes me wonder about all the possible hype about the engine tray and valve guide wear. Does the engine sound tight? Does it idle smoothly?

Since your oil change intervals are 15,000 miles, that is a perfect way to track oil consumption. How bad is it, if at all?

BTW, how is your 993 driven?

What a great thread... 300k miles should be a goal for all of us... that would take me well into retirement age... then I'll have plenty of time to restore it and drive some more...

Congrats, mine has "only" 174k Don't plan on letting sit, I drive it every occasion I have.

It's quite amazing to see a car go to 285k miles and not have a rebuild done. I'm assuming you never rebuilt the top end, either? This is all the more amazing given the performance credentials of a 911.

Seriously... The top end rebuild, or lack there off, is very intriguing...

Fantastic. It is great to read straight from an owner how great their cars are and not garage queens or fair weather friends. Very inspiring.

With the winters and salt in the the Phila area and roads during winter, any signs of rust bubbles especially around the wheel wells or the front / rear glass?

Just a hypothesis on the top end:

Cars that sit for months on end have a 'drier' start when they do get used. Since the valve guides aren't pressurized and have to basically wait for oil to pass by the seals, it's more pronounced than, say, crank bearings or rings which are pressurized or aren't shielded from oil splash respectively. And then you wind up with 285k mile untouched top ends, and low mile garage queens that need a rebuild..

Either way, great to hear. Gives me a lot of hope as I close in on 100k with very little oil consumption to date.
