Started my summer journey to San Diego from Sedona with 36,108 on the OD. Got to Encinitas with 36,108 on the OD. I did drive in reverse half-way, so that must be the answer.
Looking for an odometer repair in San Diego area...thanks.

If you need it repaired this place seems to be the place of choice (and it is close to San Diego)

Search here as mentioned for more info and ideas. Not a hard one to do....but I had to do it 2x due to a very tiny piece of gear left in the works, so make sure its all clean.

The a fore mentioned North Hollywood Speedometer is a "go-to" place if you're not DIY'ing it.

It is an easy fix as long as you are patient. I used the Youtube video as guidance, does not require removal of needle etc. One tip though, after you replace the gear just put the bezel on temporarily and don't install the rubber ring. Test drive to make sure everything works before you finalize install. I had to open mine twice, obviously that small gear tooth was stuck in there somewhere.

I just had to deal with this same issue.
Most likely what happened is the 15+ year old plastic gears spin on a petroleum-based lubricant and get really soft.
If you push the trip Odo reset while moving (e.g.: leaving the gas station after a re-fill), the gears "melt" and no longer register milage.
I would strongly advise using NHS - 1 day turn-around & reasonable pricing.

I am a DIYer but sent mine to North Hollywood because I found the opening of the case to be difficult without permanently deforming the case. They have a special tool so that it looks untouched when you get it back.

+1 for NH Speedo! They have fixed countless 911 speedos. In fact when you walk in holding your odometer they usually guess "what year 911 it's from." Only problem is that they are not close to San Diego. You can drive the car without the speedo- just mark which wires are which
