Default List of Repairs

I just got a quote for some upcoming repairs that I need to have done and I was hoping to get some feedback on the fee ranges. Here is what I need to have done:

- Oil change (both filters)
- Belts replaced (all of them)
- A/C Ballast Replaced (A/C cycling on high)
- Sunroof cables replaced (both)

The oil change is $199, belts $315, A/C ballast $570 and sunroof $1,100! The oil change and belts seem reasonable but the sunroof repair seems really high. I looked into the DIY and apparently the sunroof and ballast can be a real PIA and very time consuming. While I would love to tackle this project, I'm not 100% confident in my skills and available tools.

I know others have tackled these projects on their own but has anyone had them done by a mechanic recently and if so are these fees reasonable?

Thanks,

JH

What is included in "all belts"... if you are just talking about the v-belts, that price seems very high (and a pretty easy DIY). Does the quote include the power steering belt?

i just went through a quote for the belts last month. The belts + the sensor at a P-Car specialty shop was $350. I purchased the belts, sensor, and bolts to do the job with fellow rennlisters for $155 from sunset Porsche in my garage.

200 for an oil change seems nuts but prob inline with what porsche dealer charges, thats a routine DIY.

you dont need special tools for the belt job. just metric allen set, and triple square

hey PNog, i love your car! ha!

Default $700 to $800 for the sunroof cables is right.

Four hours laber. The sunroof transmission can be very difficult to synchronize. I think $1100 is totally fair for that job.

Includes the alternator, A/C and fan but not the power steering.

Thanks for the feedback.

Does $570 for the A/C ballast seem fair? From what I have read on the forum, this can be a real PIA job.

Check out this thread for the Laker method of changing the AC ballast resistor
https://rennlist.com/forums/964-foru...procedure.html

If 993 is similar to 964 this method takes less than an hour and less if you are left handed!

$199 for the oil change seems fair to have someone do it, considering parts range from $125-150...

In other terms
If I have to perform these on my car:
oil change-filters; 1 hour
belts replaced; half an hour
A/C Ballast oil side; 1.5 hours (bumper out)
Sunroof cables; 1 to 1.5 hours (most in adjustments)

I would def do the belts and the oil yourself. Many DIY threads on how to do it. Pretty easy.

There's something different from the torsion bar era cars? Seriously, I was out of the business before any 964/993 needed these replaced. Doing them on the earlier cars was a pain only in respect to modifying the earlier cars to accept the later cables (2.7L-and-earlier v. superceded parts). Or else my memory has totally failed.............

Why do you need new sunroof cables? I was getting slow performance, and squirted some HHS2000 down the cables and lubed the transmission as well. Major improvement.

Also, $315 for belts is excessive. It's, what, $50 for the three belts? And changing them is a really easy job.
