secondary air injection fault

secondary air injection fault
so... my CEL ended up being a secondary air injection fault - having the secondary air check valve replaced and hopefully that will do it. Any thoughts? I've only owned my 993 cab for a month and put 1k miles on it, already in the shop and looking at $500 repair minimum. ouch!

Welcome to the world of Porsche ownership. Either one of two things has to happen: you need to get good at doing your own work on the car, or you need to not worry about how much it costs to pay someone else to do it, because if you think $500 is a lot... you're in for a future of this:

$500?
that check valve was $65 last year when I bought one from sunset.
no way there's $400 in labor to change it.
but wait there's more,
plugged sai ports are likely the reason for the cel.
if you don't clean those yourself expect a bill larger than $500.

There are degrees in plugged SAI systems.
From cheapest to most
1. blocked SAI valve ~$50 + labor.
2. Minor SAI port blockage ~$50 new SAI valve and solvent forced through the SAI system.
3. Major blockage ~$1-2K to have someone remove the exhaust and clean out the ports.
There is a circuit to bypass the SAI monitoring but it seems to have hit or miss effectiveness.

Put $5000.00 aside for initial 12 months of ownership.

I'm using a reputable shop (Taylor Chapman in VA), so I'm just going to have to take it all in good faith. I have no ability to work on my car
Bad news is: after paying the $500 and leaving happy as a clam that I had my Porsche back on the road, not 2 minutes later a truck spit a basketball size cement ball at me and I had to run it over. I turned right back around to the shop and the front right wheel was bent beyond repair. So... another wheel and tire at least, but I'm thinking of just replacing all 4. Anyone got a good deal on 4 cool wheels for a 1996 Cabriolet?
