My wife has yet to drive my Tiptronic 993, she learnt on a manual but has only ever driven autos since. I think she will like it when she finally gets behind the wheel. Not long after (unexpectedly) passing her test we moved to Tokyo in 1989 and I bought an auto Nissan 300ZX TT which she drove all the time. "Just like a bumper car" she used to say.

I've had the e C4 for just over 3 month now and really had to twist my wife's arm to drive it. She drove about a km to home and hasn't wanted to drive it since.

I'm constantly suggesting she take it out with her girlfriends but she's not really interested.

I think she's worried she will bend or break it!

My wife was worried I would yell at her. Her father was a car guy (passed a few years back), he was into Jaguars (mil still has his 1966 Jag E-type if anyone is interested) Anyway, he would always want people to drive his car. Then he would sit in the passenger seat and yeall at them for anything he would have done differently. So she worried I would do the same.

I look at it this way. Its a 1996 C4S. Its certainly not the only one out there. Would I be upset if something ahppened to mine? Of course, but it can usually be fixed/upgraded. So whats the problem? I bought a higher mileage (64k) car that already had its share of scrapes. This way I dont feel bad driving it hard. I will absoultely take care of it, but Im not about to baby it/leave it in the garage.

Some years ago I had an ugly, tan-on-brown, 4-door Nova that was a total sleeper. My wife always used to say that she hated that car, and didn't like to drive it.

One day at work, one of my coworkers said that he saw my wife racing "Some Mexican Dude in a fart-can Honda" on the highway the day before. Naturally, my response to that was "Who won?" He said that she won, and the other guy looked really ashamed to be beat by a woman driving a POS Nova.

My wife got her own 993 which she really pushes. Funny thing is, when we go to a drive other guys try to get in front of her not to be hold back by her. Often she get afterwards compliments for her sportive driving ;-)

My wife has not driven the 993 but she has driven my 997. She's not 100% comfortable with a manual and all my cars are manuals - of those the 993 demands the most active engagement. She did drive the 997 for a whole week when her DD was in the shop once. She also spent two days driving 991s, new boxsters, Panameras, caymans, etc at Barber motorsports with me a few weeks ago. She enjoyed that and did really well. But she doesn't see my cars the way I do and has no big desire to drive them.

I will not own a car my wife will not drive. She started driving the 993 when we took it for a test drive. The other day she got called into work about two hours early. For some reason the only car with child seats was her normal car. Since she wouldn't make it back soon I had to take the boys to day care. She happily hopped in the 993.

Ironically her driving at DEs and Auto-X has been the worst for her driving normally. Now that she knows what the Porsche can do driving on the street is boring to her.

Fun thread. My wife has driven it a few times. Also a notorious short shifter as well. She is nervous when I am in the car because I want her to push it a little which she wont. But the time or two she drove it alone she came back and said that it was "fun". My car is not just fun to me...it is an experience. I doubt she will ever really understand.

I guess that is why I own one and she drives something else.

I take it no one, at least who has posted yet, had been involved with a 911 owning woman. THAT is a whole 'nother experience. Good times owning a Porsche shop in the '80s when women aspired to sports cars. And a manual was pretty much the only choice.

(No, my wife hadn't ever owned or really experienced anything car-wise until she met me. Yes, she's fully capable of driving any of the cars I've had, and has been on track enough to know she has no passion for it.)
