MY02 wheels rub rear caliper?
I'm in the final stages of getting the Dung Beetle back together after pulling & refinishing both bumpers and completing a laundry list of other, mission critical, items.
Tonight I bolted up the brand new MY02 wheels (8x18 ET50 & 10x18 ET65). I carefully checked the clearance of the rear wheels relative to the calipers and found that the wheels ever so slightly kiss the caliper edge (where it curves inwards to the hub). I completely refinished my calipers last year, coating them in red + clear. Is the clearance offered by the MY02 wheels so tight that a generous slathering of powdercoat would eliminate that gap?
I have a set of 5mm spacers that I'll install for now, but I'd certainly like some thoughts on this clearance question.

I had the same thing happen to me when I purchased a used set of MY02. It turned out that one of my rear wheels was an aftermarket wheel. I overlooked it when I purchased the wheels with tires mounted. It had very similar markings to the OE. I don't see how this can be your problem since you bought new wheels. I found another OE rear and it has 1/4" clearance.

I also had the same thing happen to me when I purchased a used set of OEM MY02. The driver's side rear wheel touched just a bit, passenger side was fine. I was putting 5mm spacers all the way around anyway, so it worked out perfectly.

I have the same wheels on my NB 1995, and a piece of cardboard 1.6mm thick is a snug fit between the caliper and rear wheel, but no threat of contact.

AOW,
Check out this thread: https://rennlist.com/forums/racing-a...too-close.html
Apparently, Steve Weiner can make some super thin spacers for you. I'd probably go that route. Let me know if you want me to take those POS, aftermarket wheels off of your hands. I have a birthday coming up, ya know.

Now I see why the smaller brakes might have an issue that the bigger brakes don't have, the caliper is closer to the wheel axis, and the the place where the spokes curve back to the hub.

Bizarre. I've never noticed how little space there is at that spot until this thread made me look. I have powder coated calipers and MY02's and although the clearance is tight (<1/4") it hasn't rubbed. You'll notice in the pictures that my caliper decals have held up nicely (thanks again).
