Default Newbie :) spare parts to have on hand?

Hi! I'm a new 993 cab owner (1996)and new to this forum

I read that having a spare DME relay is good to have in your car, are there any other parts to have just in case (and whether I should have them in my garage or actually riding around with me for emergency quick repair like the DME)?

I'm ordering the DME online, so would like to order any other spare parts at the same time.

Thanks!!

I carry a spare DME too. An extra fan belt (Porsche brand ones) in the garage would be nice too.

Small screwdriver and extra battery for your remote!

I second the dme and immobilizer battery.

Belts....nah. Trying to change these things on the side of the road has got to be ridiculous. Not only are a good amount of tools needed but I'd rather get a tow then try to struggle with that stuff for 2 hours.

remote battery and screwdriver - great idea! On a side note, I heard the immobilizer can be deactivated - it's a pain anyway, and I'd rather deactivate it then end up fixing it if it breaks! Any thoughts?

+1 on the DME and extra battery/screwdriver for the remote. I have the fan belt too, but I agree that it's probably better to have the car towed than to wrestle with replacing a belt.

ahhprods, you may be able to have it deactivated but your vehicle will be out of commission for quite a few days while it's brain is being re-programmed and your wallet drained. Spare batteries are cheaper. I'm in favor of having the belts, extra shims, bolts and the necessary tools to do the job. If you take a trip and get stranded in East Awfulgosh, even if you can't/won't do the job, there may be someone nearby who can. Also, carry a spare qt. of oil, extra fuses, a good flashlight and a first aid kit. I carry a good tire puncture repair kit also.
Oh, yeah...If you've got wheel locks, be sure you have the "key" in a place you can find it.

Oddly a used O2 sensor. If the O2 shorts (wires touch the hot muffer) it takes out the fuel pump fuse. You can plug in the spare 02 without bolting it in to get you home.

Source out a good and reliable flatbed towing service and enter that number into your mobile phone just in case all else fails.

True dat. However since they're cheap and easy to stash I'd just keep at least alt/fan belts in the trunk just so you know you've got the correct belts on hand.

I got a spare belt 13 years ago and I don't even know where it is now. I have, however, used both the spare DME and the spare remote battery.

search for: toolkit spares, spares for trip, and a few other like terms. You should find several threads.

Some of the majors have been hit here already, except get the snap-on bluepoint socket that is used for holding the alt shaft while changing the belts.....get 2, one for the car toolkit, one for the garage. Don't bother with the $25+ Porsche tool (999-571-052-02), its a disgrace to the Pcar name... Then you'd need a breaker bar for the socket and a 24mm wrench in the car to change the belts...so AAA might be a good idea if you're not a wrenching type.

don't forget the ratchet and 5mm allen socket for the fan belt.

At some point, it just doesn't make sense.
