Default Tire advice needed - pefer quiet & smooth

Car has Bridgestone Potenza 235/80/18 RE50

I need 2 new rear tires.

I can buy 2 new tires (same tires but the Z rated tires) for $500 (reatail $900).

So for the C4S, I would have the fronts non Z rated, but Z rated fr the rears (is that a problem)?

-------------------

I prefer quiet/smooth over performance - are their better cost effective options out there?

If you are budget conscious, try to find a set of used Michelin PS2's... they have proven to be smooth and quiet for my 996 C4S. Many people here will roll their eyes at used tires, but its one of the best bargains in the car world IMHO.

Check out the giant Sumitomo thread from awhile back. I have a set of these and they are great for the money. There are some recent threads on some of the new tires out there too.

if you want quiet & smooth your best bet is brand new tires as age and heat cycles stiffens them up.. tires are only good for 4-5 years. What kind of driving are you doing? I would go matching front and rear to make sure the car is balanced.

+1. You can get a whole set of Sumi's or Hankooks for the cost of a rear set of PS2s.

Agree - Sumitomo's highly recommended, can't be beaten for the price, wear quality and comfort - oh, and road holding [day to day].

Unless you have a need to pay big bucks or race.

I had SO2's - much prefer sumi's at half the price.

+1 on the Sumitomos. Smooth, quiet, best bang for the buck. Certainly not the top performance tire, but respectable and the trade-off is acceptable if smooth and quiet is what you're going for.

I'm having a set of Michelin Pilot Super Sports installed this week so I'll let you know how they are.

Michelin Pilot Super Sports. Take a look at the recent threads. Fantastic at a reasonable price.

I put a new set of hankook ventus v12s on. I've been happy so far. If you are nearby you are welcome to come by for a ride.

I like my Hankook V12's. Switching to 17" wheels will give a noticeable improvement as well.

I had Michelin Pilots and switched to Continental DWS. The Contis are smoother and quieter, but the I prefered the Michelins. I am on 17s.

Matching front and rear is def recommended.

+1 Continental DWS is a very quiet tire, all season & high tread wear rating too.

Currently running the Hankooks V12 and I would def re-purchase esp for the price point.

+1 on the Sumi's. Mounted 4 several weeks ago, quiet, smooth, grip feels the same on the street as the variety of other tires I've had on the car including Pilot Sports. Can't beat the value.
