Default oil consumption check

I've done a search but haven't found anything definitive. I just turned 35K and treated her to special treat of non Etoh fuel for lunch.
Been monitoring the mileage between oil adds over the last 5K miles. I am averaging about 1500-1800 miles per quart. Does this sound about right for a burn rate?

There are tons of threads about oil consumption. I believe Porsche did issue some guidelines but I don't recall what they were. IIRC 2500 - 3000 miles/qt is very good and 600 miles/quart means its time for a top end rebuild. Keeping the oil low level on the low side will help reduce consumption. If the dash gauge is over the red when warm I know I have overfilled a bit. Aggressive/track driving will increase consumption rates of course.

It's pretty decent. Porsche says 1000 miles /quart is within norm. My 108K engine uses a quart every 2200-2400 miles. It also depends on the type of driving. Shorter trips generally result in relatively higher oil consumption.

I do not need to add oil between changes.

The Turbo gets oil changes every 5,000 miles (Mobil V-Twin 20W50).
The Boxster goes about 7,500 miles between changes (Mobil 5W50).

Be careful buying ethanol free fuels now, almost all of it is 91 octane. Very hard to find 93 octane the past 4-6 weeks. I'd rather used 93 octane with 10% ethanol than 91 octane pure gas.

Lower octane pure gas more damaging than the ethanol? It was 91. I guess I'll be just putting that in my lawn equipment from now on. Thanks for the advice. Interestingly, the two specialty shops that work exclusively on the p-cars in my area that have done my oil change used Mobil 1 0W40. I went through the posts and it looks like that this was not recommended by the forum crowd.

I believe the porsche standard is 1.6L per 1000KM, which is about 1 quart per 388 miles.

This is ridiculous.

1 quart per 1500-1800 is ok, not great, just ok.

My turbo goes through 1 quart every 3500 or 4000 miles.

I have to add a quart between oil changes, about 5000 mi. If you are topping off to the top of the dipstick, you are probably over filling and losing quicker than the engine is actually using. Keep it filled to half-way on the dipstick.

that's relitively good advice. I accidently stumbled upon my cars "sweet spot" early this season. Since I got it 2 years, and 22K miles ago...I have always kept it near the top of the dipstick, more or less at the 2 o'clock position on the gauge. I routinely used 1/2 qt every 1K miles.

After my last oil change-right before getting back to driving it this season, the oil level was at the 2/3 thirds point on the stick, and a solid 3 o'clock position on the dash gauge. It was almost 1500 miles before I checked the level again-I was busy you know. That and the car has always ran cool, so checking the oil level in early spring requires throwing a towel over the rear grill and letting it idle in the driveway for 20 minutes to come up to temp.

After doing that, I was still at 2/3 rds on the stick, and at 3 o'clock. Checked again every 5-700 miles. At around 2500-3000 miles-gotta check the maintence log to accurately state the mileage, it needed approx 1/2 qt to bring it back to 2/3 rds, and 3 o'clock.

Many have said here before, these cars all have a different "sweet spot" regarding oil level. I think I accidently found mine. I always thought that a 1/2 qt per thousand miles was acceptable, so 1/2qt per 2500 is even better.

This car constantly amazes me.

Good luck Chappy!

Thanks M-Daddy!
I'm currently registering about 3:30 on the gauge and 2/3-3/4 up the twist on the stick.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I'm OK at the moment with the oil. It's been about 4K since my last oil change.
