No affiliation with OdometerGears.com other than being a satisfied customer. I just bought odo replacement gears for another car from them. Before taking your car to a repair shop for this work, check out the DIY instructions for a 993 on their Website. The gear for the 993 is inexpensive as is the 2 day Priority Mail default shipping.

I have seen the DIY video footage and although it is a pretty straight forward procedure, I may just want to spend the $130.00 and have the gears replaced and the speedometer gone through.

My odometer just went down a few days ago, and I did contemplate doing this DIY, but in the end of the day, I took it Palo Alto Speedometer and had them pop it out and fix it. I pick my battles selectively, and I would rather pay $150 and not worry about this.
They are also adding a stop pin, so that the needle doesn't drop all the way to zero - I have the needle stick sometimes then "pops" up. This is why.
