Default Can I remove alternator if I cut the belts off...

The special bit to hold the fan from spinning slipped and is somewhere under alternator. Don't feel like making a trip to store again. So can I just get the belts off (ac off already) and remove alt/and fan together. Then take the pulleys apart once I have it out, and have recovered my &E$&E bit?

Forgot to put rag to catch stuff...

George / Iko - isn't there another way to stop the spinning using a screwdriver?

That is what I did as I could not get the shims apart - X-Acto knife to the belt and then removed the alternator and got the shims apart on the bench.

Stick a screwdriver covered in cloth between the fan blades. Then loosen with the 24mm nut with a wrench.

Heat it up with some MAPP gas, or soak it in penetrating oil. Then try again.

may be too late... but given that the blades tend to crack with age.. Id be hesitant to apply much force to them... Belts are cheap, cut the suckers.

I think I'll wait about 10 years to answer this.....

FYI, 15/16" socket works just as well on the big nut.

..but not so well on the smaller ones.

Question ?????

The three soft bolts that hold the alt' pulley together; any downside to replacing them with same size regular hardier bolts? I got some bolts from NAPA this morning and thinking about using them.
