Default O2 sensor reset?, seems rich

Ok my car failed smog a couple of weeks ago and since that time I changed the plugs and wires (fun) and it seemed to be running well. Now I just put in a new o2 sensor and let the car idle for a short while (5mins) it now smells very rich and was not idleing quite as smooth. Is this because the sensor is new and the car needs to recalibrate?if so how long does this take, how many miles? I need to get it resmogged ASAP.

Thanks
Is there anything I can do to aid the process?

These don't usually require any adaptation when installing new oxysensors.

Did you use a factory one or a generic?
