Boy you took the words right out of my mouth. The 90s were a great time that just seemed great because it was "supposed" to be. Now the world seems in decline and I like the simpler things from then...not least of which are my cars.

Yes, as touchstones to the past but in a way, cars were better than (not designed as safety bubbles, not cheap plastics, just the right amount of convenience without all the electro nonsense, etc)...The 993 is a perfect example of a great car from the 90's...or is it the 70's?

Interesting post - and hard to argue with.

I have a 997.1 C2S that I really love - but it's mostly the driving that I love, I'm not in love with the car's mechanics bits - the feel, the sights, the sounds. If that makes any sense. Thus, I am looking for a 993 to buy. But I will not get rid of the 997. I really enjoy it and it has a place in my stable - if nothing else it will remain my track car as I have no intention of taking the 993 to the track.

The one area where I will disagree a bit is the statement that the 997 is like a BMW - it is closer to a BMW than a 993 but not that close. I say this because I also own an E92 M3 and it is very different from my 997. The 997 is definitely more of a real sports car than the M3. And that isn't a knock on the M3 - it is a wonderful, fast, aggressive sports coupe. But it's definitely more cushy and comfortable than the 997.

I test drove the 997 when they first came out. Very quiet and refined but not my cup of tea. Love the old torsion bar SC of the 80's and of course the more refined 98C2S. These aren't my daily drivers.

What I loved from the 90's:

Grunge music (first part of decade)
Novelty of the Internet
Pre-CGI movies (required actual acting)
Diablos and 993s'

Things I don't miss from the 90's:

AOL or Prodigy
Windows 3.1 / 95
Cell phone contract with only 20 min / month talk time
The freaking Macarena

Sorry to the OP.....

Yeah totally agree. I had a E36 M3 euro, a E39 M5, a E34 M5 and they have a nice character, all different from each other. But a Porsche is a level up. When I made the decision to sell my E39 M5 for the 993, it was a hard one because the hp of the M5 was much stronger before I modded my car. But the lightness, the tossability of the 993 or 997 is much better.

You have a nice E92 M3. Nice to have one too

Jabberwocky has hit the nail on the head with regards to the 90's and that's definitely why most of us love the 993's.

It was the last decade of car purity. Think Integra Type R's, NSX's, 993's, BMW M3's, etc. etc. with no non-sense electronics. Some of us were in our teens and these cars seemed light-years away in affordability too...

Other notable pluses to the 90's:

Snowboarding
Walkman's

Man I never swore I'd get old but now being 35 I miss that decade alot!

^ Walkmans were the 80s dude...in the 90s we had the "discman"...a really bad idea and the foreshadowing of electronic frustration and shortcomings.

I rented a 997 cab for a weekend before buying my 993 cab and I agree with the comments above. But the biggest difference for me is the appearance of two models, particularly the cabs. The 996/997 cabs added a hump aft of the cockpit to allow the top to fold beneith a cover while the 993 has a traditional cabriolet cover. With the tops up, the 993 definitly looks cleaner. With the tops down the 993 has a timeless, retro look that is a classic. All of this is "in my opinion" but I have people regularly give me a thumbs up.

I'm so sure about the 993 that i don't have interest for a replacement. It's a great car to stare at, driving is a ton of fun, and you can tinker with confidence.
