yes, been done many many times over. search the archives. Most like to upgrade to the CDR-220, including myself. look at Navone engineering for the right cables.

From: nowhere, but at least I'm getting there fast!
there are typically two schools of thought: factory radio like Porsche/Becker CDR-220 or more modern looking decks. The former are more expensive, usually bought used and are technologically inferior (including little to no iPod/iPhone interface -- although you can get it to play as an auxillary input). The latter are less expensive, fairly easily found and have bluetooth and iPhone interface but many (including me) do not feel it fits with the rest of the interior. If that is not a concern to you, then get something new -- it will be better and cheaper.
Also, there is the issue of whether you have the "hi-fi" option and whether you need to upgrade your speakers.
Regardless, do a search under CDR-220 in this forum and you will find many options discussed.

I just did a complete upgrade - speakers and headunit - last fall. I went with speakers that fit the factory locations and speaker grills so you can't tell from looking. I picked a Kenwood BT948HD for the headunit because it doesn't stick out like some of the sony and alpine units do. It matches the interior pretty well and allows tons of options for backlighting, so I was able to match it to the other interior lights pretty easily. I now have CD/iPod/iPhone/HD radio/Sat radio/Pandora streaming functionality/Bluetooth at my fingertips.
I installed an Alpine head unit and amplifier. It gives me iPod, bluetooth, usb, aux, and a single CD player. The iPod is controlled from the radio, and displays song, album, and artist.
I debated the CDR 220, but my 993 is a driver (about 5k miles a year). The Alpine doesn't look out of place in the dash like some of the more gaudy ones do.

I installed an Alpine BT 126, amp and new speakers in the car in my avatar. I thought the Alpine unit looked much less like an arcade game than so many do. If your speakers are original you will likely need to replace them....mine had turned to powder. I bought from Crutchfield and was very pleased with their level of product knowledge and willingness to give advice......Chris
