Have you considered checking the shift linkages?

+1. I tried to make that point in post #20...

Tugging on the shift linkage from below will not tell you what's going on inside the shift lever mechanism - there are various bushings & guides that WILL fail. I've replaced these components for numerous 993 owners over the years.

Andreas and NP993,

Yes, the shift linkage has been 100% ruled out of the equation. I disconnected it completely at the rag joint.
If I grab the input shaft of the linkage, twist and push in I can feel the resistance in there. If I twist and pull out everything feels good. I have tried this in every gear from underneath the car.
That was my first thought a well, especially considering that my shift linkage is a home made contraption... I really wish that was the problem.
Thanks!

Shift Eccentric Bushing?

Could someone please explain to me what the symptoms of a misadjusted Shift Eccentric Bushing would be?
I read in the manual that you should adjust this until all of the gears can be shifted into easily with no notchiness, but I am not sure if this is an all or nothing type of adjustemnt... meaning if this was out of adjustment would it affect ALL the gears or could it possibly affect the movement of the shift selector rod in/out movement indiviudally? I will probably re-jack up the car later this afternoon and play with this a bit.

As an update the transmission is re-filled with Redline 75-90 transmission oil (non-NS this time). I took it for a drive yesterday and 2nd gear seams better now, 4th and 6th are still pretty tough to get in/out of. Other than the difficult shifting the transmission sounded and worked fine but I did not push it at all.

Here is a picture of the shift eccentric. I can't find much information on what it actually does online... it seems to be a magical adjustment that most people don't touch. In the parts diagram it just looks like a screw.
According to the instructions you loosen screws A and then slowly spin B until the shifter shifts smoothly. Sounds simple enough but I want to know what it does before I start messing with it.
Thanks again!

Check with Cactus - I believe he messed with this on his 993.
