Default Looking to purchase a track day car. Recommendation?

I am interested in purchasing a track car. I am a newbie to this and looking for advice. I would like something that is fun and will hold up well on the track. I am thinking street legal so I can get it back and forth but it will really only be used for the track. I don’t want to take any of my current cars out there at this point. I am hoping to spend something less than $20k. Any input is appreciated.

Or a Cayman or Cayman S. 2006's are getting cheaper. Boxsters are also VERY cheap.

If you're new, why not reconsider using your current ride. Do a few DEs with it and see how you feel about the whole thing.

Won't hurt your car one bit, be good for you both...fresh brake fluid and pads and go have fun and learn.

A set up, dedicated track car is an unforgiving animal for a new driver.

Spec E30, E36. Good for learning, affordable maintenance. Reasonable tire wear.

as nice as a cayman s would be, I think 20k puts them out of the budget, but you never know. might find one on offer at 25 and work them down to 20.
I'd say boxster, miata or 944.
if you are looking to race call up air power racing out at miller, they always have customers looking to sell one to buy another.
NASA has a nice info sheet on class to choose with budgets
http://www.nasaproracing.com/proraci...-To-Choose.pdf

if you just want to play at the high number of open track days you have massive choices, could even buy and try and then sell for another car.
maybe a 350z? 911sc? m3? lots of fun cars.

the best part is miller motorsports park is only 55 miles away!

how about a mini cooper? has anyone tried one of those on the track? 15k!

marc, your '96 would be fine out there for controlled open track days like Lapping Days puts on. they boast no one has ever swapped paint at one of their events.

I think the first question to ask is what's your skill level? if you've never been on the track before, let alone autocrossed, it might be a good idea to make sure that you will actually like it. Do you have aspirations of racing? What's your budget? How much time do you think you'll devote to it? The answers to all of these questions will determine your direction. There's a lot more to go over, but I don't have time to hit all of the points. Maybe later this weekend.

Love these threads where the OP asks a question ... then disappears.

Couldn't have slammed out a quickie better than this. Try with what you've got, plenty of time to buy.

(Spent last Fri/Sat at Laguna with 4 students over the two days. 3 brand new, 1 coming from autocross. All were light years behind what their cars could do. And we weren't going quicker than brisk street driving.)

And then you've got "experienced" guy running solo out there at New Jersey. Camera car is a Corvette. Punch line is in the title, in the last 15-20 seconds of the clip. But there's plenty to comment on about 'Vette driver, too.

So I guess the other point to make is that GOOD instruction is paramount, and don't be in a rush to "solo".

Did someone say MINI? Oh, yes...K722070! I've been an instructor for over 30 years and driven a bunch of different fast, great-handling cars on track but I never get tired of my MINI, "TRACKRAT". It's reliable, predictable, inexpensive to maintain, relatively easy to work on and there's a world of mods, wheels and tires available for them. It's fast and nimble enough for me but, those who have huge egos will not be satisfied.

Hey Mr. instructor in the Mini, what's with that "11 and 1" hand position on the steering wheel? Dud'int look like any freeway I've seen of late
You instruct that driving position
