Spoke to TireRack last night and of the 3 approved tires, they only have the Bridgestones. Continental has discontinued the Sport Contact 2.
The dealer will only install Porsche approved tires, and can't do the state inspection with the current tread depth on the rears. Only 11k miles on the current set.
So much for a not too expensive annual service

There are several wrong nouns in this post starting with "dealer". Scott, why in God's name would you want a dealer to mount your tires? Are you leaving in a post-apocaliptic desert where all independent tire shops had been converted to Porsche dealerships? That is scarier than I can imagine, my condolences.

PCNA and the N-spec rating is not entirely accurate. Find a tire you like, research and enjoy. Many Rennlisters run other tires and have never looked back. Like me!

Where I live, this is just about the case.
I took the 993 in yesterday for the annual service, oil change and state inspection. While they were performing the inspection, they noted the rear tires are beyond the acceptable tread depth to pass inspection.
Not a big deal, was only wondering why Continental discontinued the Sport Contact2. I love the dealer I use! They do a great job at a fair price.
Thanks to all for your feedback.

I have Conti 2s on one of my wheel sets currently on 993. The other street set has PS/2s. Both are pretty sub-par in my opinion, especially given the price. Just a data point.
Continental is making SportContact 3 now. Which, of course, are no better.
I'd be _really_ curious to see a written note from the dealer where they "can not install not Porsche-approved tires". I really would. Any anti-monopoly and RICO lawyers out there?
