Default Vintage Car

Not sure if my 96 993TT is now a "vintage car", but I have had this idea in my head that I would like to own one and maybe do some of the vintage tours (California Mille) or the like.

At first I wanted a Sunbeam Tiger as this is the only Shelby touched car still accessible without being a millionaire. I have heard that it is not such a great car to drive.

Then I wanted a 68-71 Corvette. My wife hates this.

Now I am thinking:

E-Type Jag
MGA
Alfa Duetto
914/911
Alfa Guiletta

I would appreciate any wisdom from Rennlist regarding these cars or the whole idea of owning/driving a 40-50 year old car

A friend of mine had a Shelby Dodge Colt that ripped. and he certainly wasn't a millionaire.

He even got Carroll Shelby to autograph his dash.

looked like a little sh*t econo box- but the thing ripped.
I believe it was built in the early 80s

If you can fit in and drive an E Type that would be my pick. I wanted to buy a totally restored Series 1 OTS (open two seat) but my legs were too long to fit. I was really disappointed because I had wanted one since high school. Peter Egan has done some great writing about Jaguar restoration, he restored a Series 1 coupe, and the joy of driving one. Good luck....Chris

Of that list, the MGA stands out as VERY easy to work on and keep running. I would add an Austin Healey to your list... I prefer the early, non-roll-up window variety. If you could find a nice long-hood 911, that would make a nice "book-end" with your 993TT.

Well, not only that but there's all kinds of road rally's for those types of vehicles .. like the Snow Ball here in NorCal to name one. Every once in awhile I think 'If I had my old 914-6 back, I could be doing this .. : http://www.thesnowballrally.com/

Also, sign up to the daily Bring-A-Trailer email for a morning 'gift' of some of the coolest cars in the country for sale ... http://bringatrailer.com/

Edit: I'd also vote for an Alpha GT coupe ... :-)

seriously doubt that our cars would be allowed in a true "vintage" tour. FYI, there are still some excellent buys in real honest-to God Shelby GT350's. If you're interested, PM me and I can give you the right places to lurk and gain some insight. IMHO, the Sunbeam Tiger is an uncomfortable car to drive for an extended distance and a bear to work on...even compared to a 993.
Keep in mind that there's a reason that they haven't accelerated in value compared to their other Shelby "cousins". Funny, tho, about those rallies and tours...You rarely see anything but the European cars on them. To them, American "Iron" is so gauche!

Hal, as others have commented, not sure your 993 is "vintage". Porsche considers the 993 "calssic".

Like Steve G said, budget could be your biggest constraint.
My wife and I wanted to move into a classic for some time; we finally decided on a 356 for several reasons. A classic car definitely takes more maintenance, and reading the owners manual some of that maintenance was expected of the car owner.

So the real question is how much do you want to spend?

I've never heard of any organized vintage event, be it racing, a tour, anything with a "mille" at the end, etc. allowing any cars beyond 1970 or so. It's going to be a long, long time before a 993 would be considered vintage, if ever.

I would look at a 356. I bought one last year and drove it 2000 miles home. It is a comfortable car and fun to drive.
