Door hardware tune-up
Im in the middle of an exterior detailing project and my door handles had to come off. While I have the interior door panels off I decided to replace the speakers and add some dynamat...
I figure that I may as well replace the actuators and clean up whatever I can to ensure that everything works smoothly. Andreas is known to have silky smooth door handle action. Any tips on cleaning the guts?

I've never messed with anything inside of the doors, so my only thought would be to study the operation of the linkages and then properly clean & lubricate all pivot/contact points.
More pics of your amazing find are always appreciated.

FWIW: While you have the panels off install Window Express. One of my favorite mods.

and check the pins on the lock actuators .. they can shear off from use so good time to inspect and replace with factory plastic or create your own bullet proof ones out of metal ...

Christian,
I may be the only RLister that has done this DIY except for the originator. But if you are in there it is pretty straighforward. It's the door strap detent mod that 'may' prevent the dreaded broken weld syndrome.

Unrelated, you own two TR6's?? Unfair! I think those more fortunate than others should share..... the transport company will be by next week. They are my second favorite British car ('67 E-Jag is # 1 of course) and are a sweet looking car. Post some pics if you can.

I recently took my door handles off for a good cleaning and to replace the gaskets. Gaskets were cheap and well worth the effort. Overall easy job.
Gaskets were cracked and broken:

Curious to see pics of the inside of the door -- I've never had the panels off but plan on doing so soon. The passenger's side door doesn't click closed like it should, and it's not the hinges or striker that seem to be the problem. Probably just needs to be cleaned and lubed after all these years. I plan on replacing any wear items inside the mechanism & linkages. Anyone ever done this?

Andreas' door handles are, indeed, silky smooth. When my car was in his garage last May we thought about it and sprayed liberal amounts of WD40 (or similar substance) into the "trigger' behind the door handle and into the lock on the door jamb.
The improvement was immediate and, honestly, astonishing. It become an absolute pleasure to open the doors. As we did them one at a time I actually went around the car side to side and compared.

Never use WD40 for a long term lube. It's designed primarily as a water displacement product. An all weather white lithium spray grease would be my choice. In fact, I have new door handle seals waiting in my basement and I plan on doing this same job in the spring.

Those pictures are great. Let's see,
-yes to white lithium grease on the hinges
-my door checks are tight, quiet and a-o-k
-I bought one tr6 when I was 15. After 25 years of low budget maintenance I got a do-over by buying a mint one on BaT
-Ordering new actuators Monday
-The handles are now cleaned of gunk. There was some old grease that had just gummed up so nothing was all that smooth and the pins wouldn't retract quickly. I'm inclined to use fluid film on the moving parts now but they're not going back in for at least a week so I have time to think about it.
-definitely looking into that one touch window mod
