Default C2 versus C4 shifter and boot differences

Interesting find. My C2 shifter was pretty tore up, so I bought this C4 shifter boot in same color but with a cool aluminum face plate. Not thinking there would be any difference.

I go to put it on today and realize the shaft of the C4 boot is metal and 2.5 times larger than the C2 in rubber.

Not sure what to do, any suggestions...?

Anyone want to trade my C4 for your C2 in classic grey and great condition. Hmmm...

Or anyone have a C2 classic grey shifter and boot for sale?

Thanks,
Tony

I thought the rubber shaft was a friction fit and the metal required use of a set screw...is there a screwhole in the side of the metal shaft?

Both will fit as the shaft is the same, the metal one requires a little rubber bush & a "D" clip to hold it on, part numbers 93142411000 & 99342429900 there is a rubber stop also, 93142411100 but Im pretty sure that will be inside the ****, all the above about $10 from Porsche

Tony, I put an alcantera GT3RS boot/**** on my old 993. The plastic inner clip ring parts were different. I was able to remove the ring part and swap the 993 one into the GT3 boot. Used some glue and patience and it turned out awesome! You may want to give it a shot. Mark

No bolts or screws in the C4 shaft.

I will try to order those parts first, if not I'll create my own rubber housing inside like with the C2.

Thanks for the excellent ideas guys.

+1 to what 911pervy said...

Tony, the only drawback is that the rubber inserts used in the AWD cars are there to dampen vibrations from the drive train since the shift box is integral to the torque tube..
This makes the shifter feel kinda rubbery, in my opinion.
It really is a matter of personal preference though.

I think making your own firmer insert is a good idea

Hmmmm. A bit concerned.
I purchased Tony's MY02 aluminium/leather brake and shifter just yesterday-- this is the combo from Gert. I have a C4s, will the shifter fit?

So, in my brillance, I found the baggie with the parts above that 911pery mentions.

2 rubber pieces, 1 at top as a stopper and 1 goes around the shaft to MarkD point.
Then there is a clip at the base of the shaft to keep it together.

Its on there, nice and tight. Looks ***** too. Thanks all!

Now if I can only figure out how to get the boot cover back on..hmmm

Zack, you'll be fine the metal shifter itself isn't wider on a C4 than a C2 so that wasn't my problem.

BTW, yes it has more of a cushiony feel as Mark mentions. May work on something new...

The boot top piece (shift patterned) on a C4 boot I have is aluminum colored plastic, not metal. There is a grainy pattern on top to make it look like it is cast metal, but it is not.

Possibly some were metal, but mine is definitely plastic.

Regards,

Yes it will be a big improvement. The cashmere shifter and hand brake are very worn, the PO must have driven with his hand on the shifter. Also got the cup holder for the rear tray area and the centre piece under the hand brake in black leather, should look great once I dye the centre console black.
