Default Can Plastic Air Bag Cover be Replaced?Not the Complete Air Bag

"Can Just the Air Bag Cover be Replaced" on a 3 Spoke Steering Wheel?Not the whole Air Bag, but just the Plastic cover?I have a Grey one and I want it Black.I know I can dye it Black but would rather replace it,if it can be done.The Air Bag is already removed and the cover looks like it just unclips.Is this cover keeping the Air Bag from deploying?Has anyone ever done this and does Porsche ,just sell the cover?Is it going to explode if I try to remove the Plastic Cover.Probably a real stupid question but I had to ask?Never seen a Porsche one deployed before.
Any help appreciated

Does the 996 airbag cover fold upwards when it deploys? E.g is the cover itself intact after it deploys? If it's not designed to split in the middle, then it would be safe for the OP to recover it in leather for example or in the material of your liking... Just a thought.

They blow through the middle, if you cover it in leather you would need to have a weaken seam like the Porsche leather ones do

Thanks, I think I remember reading that somewhere. I would not mess with the factory setup, safety first.

I have a 3-spoke airbag on my workbench right now and see no way to remove the original 'cover' without somehow screwing up the airbag frame. The cover you speak of has a series of openings that engage a series of tabs around the airbag body. But then there are two metal sections that are folded over the plastic cover - effectively crimping the cover in place. Could one hack this apart and make a new cover work? Probably. But it would be a hack.

You could remove the 4 nuts that hold that frame on, but I would just cut the plastic section off the old cover, the new one will then push under that frame section and clip in

Pic here may help;

This guy has sold a few so it can be done!!
