A few weeks ago I mentioned to my wife that I had plans to make some upgrades to my C4S this spring. Suspension, wheels, Fister II's, maybe seats...and she said, "why don't you look at getting a new 911"?. Very unlike her...and completely suprised me. It got me thinking...so...
I went and did a test drive of a 997 S4 last week. After the test drive I felt confident I wanted to upgrade to the new model…It was nice…and new and had a bunch of bells and whistles, and it was fast. It drove awesome. …but surprisingly by the time I got home, It was clear to me that I really enjoy my car and while it is a little older and has less power it is still more fun to drive. It may seem strange but I really like the mechanical feel of the 993. It really is an excellent way to experience the history and tradition of a 911 with enough modern amenities to make it a daily driver.
It’s funny, because I’m really not what I’d consider a traditionalist…I seem to keep cars for a year or so and then move on. The 993 is the only car I have owned more than once. Maybe in a few years I'll try the 991...until then, bring on the mods

That was a close call...glad you dodged the bullet. I used to have a 997 S and I found out very quickly that it wasn't the right decision for me. I cringe every time I realize that for the price of the 997 I could have had a pristine early 2.2 S and avoided the 45k in depreciation over the first 24 months.

My 1st Porsche was a 997.1 C2S. Then a 964 and I suddenly understood why enthusiasts love the older air-cooled Porsches. Experimented with a 997.1 GT3 for a couple of seasons, then a 997.2 C2S. In the end, after trying all of those modern Porsches, I decided to try a 993 C2S. As OP suggested that the newer ones are faster and more comfortable, the older ones just "feel" better. No regrets here, anxiously awaiting Spring!

Sold my 997.1 S with all the goodies for my current 993 C2S. No looking back, I really enjoy the connection to the older air-cooled 911's (I also have a 73S coupe) in a more modern package. I'll be keeping the 993 for a while.

I have a very nice 997.2tt cab ...but bought another 993 (turbo) yesterday. I have had three air cooled cars in the past which I have sold and now convinced I will never be without one again. Unmatched style, value and driving pleasure...and never gets boring. Don't get me wrong, the 997 is one heck of a car - just NOT nearly the fun as my two - and soon to be third - 993.

How true. Likewise analog tape vs. digital recording. More of a hassle, but you just can't beat the warm compression characteristics of tubes and tape. Speaking of compression... Be sure to have a PPI done on any vintage tube amp you consider purchasing...

Not strange. Well said. I think it is why so many of us are nuts about our cars.

Worked my way up the 911 food chain from an SC, Carrera, 964, 993 and then a 996. The 996 was fast, efficient, another step up except in reality it felt like a really fast Taurus.
Anyway, the 993 has the intimate, connected feel that the later generations seem missing. Just my humble opinion, YMMV.
