Ontario E-Test - Can you pass with SAI CEL?
I only ever considered purchasing a 95 993 due to the emission issues I had read about at the time. Now that I have been sponging up Rennlist 993 knowledge on a daily basis since September, I'm thinking I might of made a mistake and lost out on some potential low RPM torque and additional HP.
I recently e-tested an S60 Volvo in Ottawa, Ontario with a CEL. I passed, but the CEL was due to a minor emissions leak.
Does anyone know if a SAI activated CEL cause you to fail an Ontario E-Test?

They check for a cel prior to running the test, but the presence of a cel doesn't fail you. They run a tail pipe test on a dynamometer. The impact of the cel on emissions is so low it probably would not show up in a dynamometer test.

I would say based on this quote from the gov literature the answer is no :
It was taken from this brochure: http://www.ontla.on.ca/library/repos...002/291809.pdf
Best thing to do would be to call a couple of test facilities and ask them.
And btw, you're not missing out on any great power boost - really.
If the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL), also
known as the “Check Engine’’ light, on the
dashboard remains illuminated in 1998 and newer
model year vehicles, the owners will be advised
that it may indicate a malfunction of the vehicle
emissions system.

I always read it to be 1988 and up, thus making the purchase of an 87 911 G50 a wise choice, but I may be mistaken. I have an 89 and do need the e-tests.
Another concern I had when I made de decision to purchase a 95, was the premature valve guide wear on Vram cars. I never did quite understand if the 95 suffers from the same problem.
