When opening and closing my drivers side door on my 1997 993, the 2 places where the door "stops" cause a popping sound from within the door. I'm trying to figure out the fix for this but can't find anything here on the site. Any advice would be apprceiated. Thank you. Happy Holidays.
That sounds like what they call the "door check strap detent assembly". Depending on if the latch brakes inside the door panel or the latch itself would determine if it's a simple latch repair or a weld job.
It's important because it keeps your door from flinging wide open.
Check p-car.com under the DIY section and "repair items" for additional info.
Hopefully it's the door check strap part that connects to the pillar.
If its within the door, you may end up needing to replace the door. Hopefully that's not the case here.
I do find it hard to believe that these guys were unable to repair the door as I had never heard of this issue before until this post.
Very common problem on the 993's. My drivers door stop tab was pulled out from the spot welds (on the inside of the door pillar) when purchased. I drove it for a year that way. I was always careful to not open the door all the way, but never really caused a problem other than the noise opening and closing the door. I had the drivers door and passengers door stop mounting tabs welded to the door pillar from the outside. Was not too expensive and the welds were top notch. It was welded, then ground down to a smooth "fillet" and repainted that now looks like it came from the factory that way. I'm still very cautious about not opening the door all the way though.
