How do you know when ignition timing is too much retarded?

actually... if/when I get a garage space here in Providence, RI (still haven't completely unpacked yet) I might be able to put something together, instrumenting a 3.6L using the factory motronic and some custom software that is clocked to the crank angle position. I don't know how useful it will be, but at the very least we'll have some pretty graphs to look at!

From Rennsportsystems .... Poor throttle response, high oil temperatures and low power are characteristic of retarded ignition timing and in worst cases, the exhaust system may glow red.
