Transmission Mount R&R Without Dropping Tranny
#17
Bringing back an old thread. I just purchased a new RS transmission mount and want to tackle this project in the near future. The main reason for my new mount is that I have a slight notchy shift from 1st to 2nd and to 3rd but not on downshifts. This really only happens during hard acceleration or shifting when going downhill. My guess the old mount causes tranny movement under those conditions. I already have the RS motor mounts, so this will compliment my setup nicely. In addition, I replaced the gearbox fluid 2 years ago. So this is kind of my next step in addressing the notchy shift.
Before I get started I had a couple of questions: Is it recommended to also replace part 16 and 17 in the below picture? Also, Cupcar if you are out there, any chance I can borrow the lovely tool you engineer. Would really make my job easier and will take really good care of it. Otherwise, I might try to get the tool made myself. I know a good machine shop that might be up for the task. Appreciate the feedback

You might want to check out this youtube video from Jacob for trans mount install.

Thanks for sharing. But my car is a C2, the mount is completely different. C4s and turbos are much easier I understand.

going to add to this thread since there are good instructions in post #9.
I changed the transmission mount to the rs version on my little convertible last winter.
the subframe was unbolted anyway so there was lots of space to lower the nose of the tranny, rigged up a similar press as in post #1.
there is no sugar coating this, it was very tough to remove the old mount and as tough to install the new. not a fun job.
but worth it.
the difference is amazing, as big as changing engine mounts.
the old mount didn't look bad and had a function first insert installed.
now I realize the nose of the transmission must have been bouncing all over the place over rough roads.
the car feels much more secure and planted, way more fun to drive.
and of course shifting is much better.
hate to write it because its not a fun project, but if you haven't replaced your transmission mount the work needs to be done.
I did not replace the bracket($285!) and rubber buffers but will do it this summer.

I'm going to install the FD Motorsport C2 Transmission Mount. Do you mind sending me a picture of the "Press" you rigged and or explaining how you made it? I didn't really see a press in post 9 by Cupcar.
Thanks,
Magic

the press cupcar made and loaned out can be seen in post #1 pics 2,3,4 with some comments on use.
you could pm cupcar and see if it is available.
no pics, so here's a thousand or so words
I have a bearing race and seal driver set
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Master-23PC...-/381785988319
one of the plates is the same size as the transmission bushing and acted as the press.
then get a screw/bolt that will fit thru the transmission mount and a large nut plus strong washers to set up a puller.
I have this kit and used the puller parts
https://www.otctools.com/products/5-...rator-tool-set
then it is a matter of lowering the transmission nose below the tub tunnel so you can fit all these parts together and remove the old mount.
if you haven't changed the subframe bushings this is a good time to do it because this job is easier if the nose of the tranny is below the tunnel.

Great writeup with a lot of good information for getting this job done. Has there been any further development on the tool needed to remove the OEM mount (loaner/purchase)? Thanks.

I’m researching this as well. In another post there is listed the outer diameter of the bushing as 74.5mm. Another RLer used a bushing press and sleeve setup with a bolt. Inner press was 74mm OD and the sleeve press was 80mm ID, though I suspect an ID of 76mm to 80mm would work. There is a kit by Orion Motor Tech that has parts that should work once you drop the front of the transmission out of the tunnel. Orion Motor Tech Universal Press Bushing on EBay
ALSO, does anyone have the torque values for all of the bolts, especially the cross member bolts and the transmission mount center bolt torque? I can’t seem to find anything regarding this mount in the 993 Service Manual.
Found the torque specs!

I have used a standard bushing press. See sizes in pics below. I used the 74 inner and 80 outer as @fncker noted above. However, I had the Trans fully dropped. I believe the threaded rod is a bit too long to fit within the tunnel without dropping things down a bit.
