FDM makes one for TTs too.

Below are the various shifter couplings for 993 and both 964 and 993 RS.

Note the rubber in the stock 993 coupling (I believe stock 964 similar) to isolate transmission vibration from shifter, this adds a bit of slop.

Porsche used what is a 356/Early 911 coupling for the 964 RS. This eliminated some slop, but still a little loose.

The 993 RS uses a slop free universal joint, the best coupling made by Porsche for this genre car.

They are all interchangeable between the various cars.

The integra shifter is really not that much different from the 993; except of course both the forward rod and shift rod is pointing the same direction

I would attribute the mushiness to the number of soft bushings / cups that is being use. Its simply that the less flexible joint there is; the crisper the shift.
I have an RS kit on order and hoping I would at least catch up with type R shifter...

My wife bought me the shift **** #31 above as a gift from the JDM world's Type R. It had the most soft feel a piece of metal could have. Why it was not stock in the USA, go figure.

We've noticed. Although I remember this avatar from before and always enjoy Bob's well stated and balanced opinions.

Makes eminent sense, as does replacing motor and trans mounts with RS or similar units. Along with Cupcar's instructional guide on rebuilding / optimizing the shifter this is all very helpful advice. Thank you!

This sounds like a good winter project. May not end up with a GT500-like shifter, but hopefully much improved over what it is now.

Uh, yeah.

Then there's that sequential shifter adapter my cousin and I did some preliminary work on earlier this year for G50s, and saw for real in C6 Corvette guise from Pratt & Miller in conjunction with Mastershift at SEMA last week. $6500 retail. You still manually clutch, but there's a replacement shift lever (or flappy paddles) that drives servos which make the mechanical shift.

For me, I've never gotten excited about how a car shifts. Each car has its own personality, deal with it. Then again, I had to optimize numerous tailshift 914s for customers way back when..............

Come on guys! You aren't living until you down shift to 2nd instead of 4th at 100 on the way into 17 at Sebring...

Try 5th to 2nd....and pray to all the gods that your left foot is quick enough to stop the engine from hitting 10,000 RPM. It will (once) if you don't act quick enough. Also note that a shift from 5th to 2nd will lock up your rear wheels, in possibly a bad spot. As a bonus you'll be getting some new valves, and maybe a piston or two.

Someone once wrote, your mechanic doesn't mind it at all when you are shifting hard, fast and furious. More work for him...bent shifting forks, torn up synchs, wears out those clutches a bit faster, increases the probability that you'll hit the wrong gear on a down shift.

I need to unsubscribe from this thread because the thought of speed shifting a G-50 tranny makes my skin crawl. It is a zero sum gain proposition.

I am currently driving an S2000 which seems to have one of the best stock shifters I have ever felt. Before this I had a Weltmeister SS installed and thought it did a good job of tightening up the 993's shifts. But it still felt somewhat notchy and obviously more force to get into gears. Not smooth like a Honda shifter, but the throw definitely felt a lot better.

One thing too is that if one changes the Porsche stock syncros from brass to Porsche motorsport steel parts, the shift will take even more force and be more "notchy" to shift - although one can shift faster without beating the syncro and have a longer syncro life span.

Compromises, compromises...
