is the straight pipe the inlet or the outlet (connection to big ovals) of the muffler ?
and why is there a difference in mufflers ? is one better then the other one ?

Straight pipe connects to the exhaust tips.

Stage III are a bit louder than Stage II, and more growl to them.

The straighter, shorter pipe is the outlet. The larger curved pipe is the inlet (from the cat.)

'96-'98 993s came with either Bischoff or Gillet mufflers. Porsche used 2 different manufacturers during this period (not sure why) and the 2 different brands are intermixed throughout those years. The mufflers are virtually identical in design, so one is no better than the other.

Correct. The III's sound fantastic, one of the best sounds I've heard on any car. However, it's a street car, and on top of that its a Targa (was shocked at the difference in sound with the top open vs closed) and the III's didn't pass the wife test. If this were even an occassional track car (or a coupe) I would be keeping the III's.
