Question Goo Gone

I am removing the Carrera script from my engine cover. I got the plastic Carrera off, but the adhesive is still on it.

A friend gave me a bottle of Goo Gone. Has anyone used Goo Gone on their paint? Did it damage the paint at all?

I assume it will also strip the wax off the paint too.

thanks,
--Joe

I've used it on motorcycle gas tanks. worked well and I don't remember any problems with the paint. but, it was a race bike so I didn't scrutinize the paint much.

Default goo gone

Try a hair dryer and a soft plastic scraper to remove most of the grey adhesive residue. Be gentle. When most gone, soak a paper towel with GG and let sit for a few minutes. Then use scraper again. Note that you will probably still be able to see a shadow of the removed script from some angles/in some light, but repeated apps of light body compound, polish and waxing along with light exposure will help make it become more "invisible" over time.

Goo Gone is 100% safe on your paint. I've used it several times to remove the badge adhesive.

Park in the sun, to warm up the glue. Wurth Citrus Degreaser is also a good product to use. Then, wash, clay, wash, polish, top with your favorite sealant wax.

I usually use WD40. Less harsh then most products. And it liquefies adhesives and tar type products.

Or you can use 3M Adhesive Remover which is made for this exact application. Fast working too, but if you already have GG in your garage it looks like the same results can be achieved

+1 WD40, it doesn't dissolve the adhesive, it makes it not sticky. Safe for paint.

I'm with you on the 3M Adhesive Remover. This stuff is great. Works well removing tar too.

^^^^ Yep it's made for removing the gray backing tape on emblems. I will give it a shot on tar. I always used 3M Wax and Grease Remover, but love a dual use product. I have cabinets full of crap. Thanks for the hint.

Joe,
Be sure to reapply wax to any areas you use Goo Gone, 3M Adhesive Remover or other similar cleaners, because they definitely strip the wax!

I've heard that dental floss can be used to remove the script without breaking it. Depending on the color of your car you may find that you have a "ghost" image of the script in your paint.
