This was completely worth it. I had spent many hours fooling around trying to fix the system myself but could not get it right. (I'm pretty sure it was overcharged initially- it would short cycle on low fan speeds and the pressures were high.)

Now the AC works pretty well. It's not as good as my Volkswagen, but it keeps up with San Diego hot weather.
I did the same last summer and was glad I did. Cost about $100 and took about an hour while I waited at local indie shop. I walked around with the mechanic as he used the "sniffer" checking for leaks in all the tricky spots. Found that the fill valve was leaking ($20). Two summers later.....stil blowing cold. 993's are very sensitive to pressure.

Where, oh, where is this mechanic in MA that actually has a clue about A/Cs? Tell me! Puhleeeeze!

Thanks! Good to know that there's a shop with a clue about A/Cs. I'll either try to charge and see what happens or will take it there (or do both).

I'm thinking just charging it now with one bottle and seeing how it behaves in the spring. That's a quick $16 solution
