Default Porsche 911, and 9/11

On such a somber anniversary, how about some topical levity: not too long ago, a buddy's girlfriend came up to me after seeing me park my car and asked me what kind of car it was. I said "It's a Porsche 911". She said, "Why would anyone name a car after the terrorist attacks?!?"

I calmly explained that the Germans always hated us after WWII, and this was their way of getting back at us. She was incensed.

My buddy and I have never tried harder to keep a straight face

She must think she drives a 710 since that's what's on her engine. Is she still getting money from the tooth fairy and Santa Claus?

My brother was standing in line to get tickets to a ball game once. His girlfriend was standing in a puddle of spilled coffee, wearing shoes with leather soles. After she stepped off of it, he convinced her that coffee was actually very good for leather, and she actually stood in it again. Now she's my sister in law and we still rib her for that.

On 9/11, during the terrorist attacks, I cringed when it dawned on me that the date matched our cars' model number. All these years I've been surprised there's been nothing made of it.

When Karen first met me and heard that I was using race911 for an email address, she thought I was a cop/fireman/EMT because that's what "911" means, right? (Yeah, she's blonde. Also a bank VP.)

I've had it for nearly 20 years now (first with AOL), and our meeting pre-dated 9/11/01 by several years.

There's been speculation that `911' was the code for the Al Qaeda operation that day. After the first plane hit it was remarked by the terrorists that the ``Porsche has started". I forgot where I read this but I did not make it up.

I live in New Zealand and even had a lady rip into me at the gas station about my personalized plate on my 993 that said 9ELVEN. She said how could I celebrate such a terrible event with a plate on my car (or something along those lines).

Don't laugh, but someone I know once boasted he had "N1" valves in his car. The exhaust valves weren't N1 for some reason, he said rather disappointingly.

...they had "EX" on them
