After being gone from the 993 fold for about 3 years, I am ready to come back.
I have located a few cars I like, but my favorite is a 95 coupe with 52k miles in Orange County. The seller, an occasional R-lister, and I have agreed to a price, pending PPI, and I have set one up at Callas for 9/19.
Since I am in Florida, I'll be flying out to personally check the car out and attend the inspection. I recall that both Callas and Hergesheimer's were well respected shops and chose Callas kind of arbitrarily. Any suggestions?
Also, the seller has had the car serviced at Steve's Independent Porsche Repair for the past 6 years or so. Does anyone here know Steve and have a way of contacting him?
I am really excited about getting back into a 993, but I don't want to be starry-eyed, so I will be leaning on you guys for help. More to come.
I used Hergesheimers for a PPI. They were very thorough in the inspection. That was four years ago. I assume it is the same people running the shop. I believe the person I was in touch with at the shop was Laura.
Hope all goes well with the PPI and your own inspection.
where the car is located I would think. Callas Rennsport is in Torrance, CA, the so called South Bay, Hergesheimer's is in Lake Forest, CA Orange County. Google both sites; you'll see they are quite a distance apart. Laura is the person to talk to at Hergesheimers, Tony Callas or Tom Prine at Callas Rennsport.
Regardless, you can't go wrong with either shop. If I were in your situation, and being that both shops are very good, I'd go to the closest shop. I am very familiar with both shops, pretty much the same personnel for years.
Before you fly out you could ask for a "Rennfax". Basically asking for someone in the area to check out the car personally. It is not a mechanical inspection. Just what they see visually.

+1 for Hergesheimers. Just had my 993 PPI there and they were excellent.
Another +1 for Hergesheimers. I had a PPI done there on a 993 and thought they did a very thorough job. They turned up a bunch of issues and steered me away from the car. Laura was great to deal with and even offered me a discount on my next PPI if I found another candidate. I ultimately wound up using TRE (another good SoCal shop) for the car I bought because of proximity to the seller, but I'd definitely use Hergesheimers again if I needed a PPI for a car located in that area.
