Default Installed a Self-Dimming Rear View Mirror

I bought a self dimming mirror from eBay for the 993 a few months back. The total cost was $110, not a bad price. I finally got around to installing it today. Not hard, but a little time consuming. Taking the old mirror off was easy and installing the new one took some fiddling. Once mounted, I ran the wires under the windshield weather stripping down the A-pillar and to the fuse box. The wiring is completely hidden. To do it right, the dash had to be removed.

Is this a must do mod…. no. However, the new mirror looks cleaner and works well. I did not hook up the wiring so that the self dimming feature turns off when you put the car in reverse.

Interestingly, the standard mirror I removed was an Audi mirror with a part number of 4D0 857 511. The self dimming mirror was also an Audi mirror with a part number of 4D0 857 511 B.

The original option code for the self dimming mirror was XE3 and was priced at $448.

good job Chuck! I saw the mirror as well and considered it, but the flip down feature does the job for me.

Whats the thing with the blue and white light? Police related?

I would assume/guess the white light is the courtesy light and the blues would be some type of sensor

That is an Infrared Security System (with center map light). Option Code 529 with a sticker price of $216.

I have that security option too. Seems pretty unusual. I have no idea if it works or improves the security system.

Chuck, beautiful interior!

Just a word of warning - the self dimming mirror in my A6 sprung a leak when the car was six or seven years old. I was never able to remove all traces of the fluid from the leather.

Chuck,

Ya just want to go ahead and give it to me? I'd hate to see it leak all over those beautiful sport seats

The "infrared security" option is adjunct to the central alarm/imobilizer feature. The infrared function would sense glass breakage setting off the cars central alarm/imobilizer system.

In practice even a not so skilled thief can break the door glass in 2 seconds and make off with any interior contents and or radio in less than 10 seconds.
All that's left is the 993s horn sourced alarm whailing......
Ask me how I know..!
