Isn't that one of the Europe only models?

Its Europe only and not being made any more. They pop up on Ebay UK from time to time. I tried to order it from a UK store but they only had the non amber colored faceplates.

would the radio function in the states? aren't the AM and FM frequencies a bit different?

AM should work both places but FM uses different frequency stops. Some radios can be set for FM in either side of the pond but I'm not sure about the Grand Prix - my guess is not.

Actually I believe the FM will work fine but the AM will not. The FM on the European radios tunes in 0.1 increments so you can still tune whatever station you want. However, the AM spacing is different, you might be able to tune into a couple of stations where you can get it to tune in either to the correct frequency or close enough to get a signal but in general the AM will not work. This is based on my experience with using a Becker Indianapolis which I think is very similar to the Grand Prix. I got mine off ebay.de so you might look there for the Grand Prix.

Google the becker guys in Sydney. I was going to buy one but at $1500AU I thought my money was better spent else where. The tuners can be switched from Euro to USA. Very nice unit too by the way.
No matter how good the head unit is, going along the road they still sound terrible!

This model is one the one to have on our 993. Very Nice model on the cockpit. Good quality but quite expensive.

I recently ordered one of these from a store in Germany. It arrived the other day. Installed it today. Very nice build, and nice fat full sound. Awesome tuner.

I'm a bit of a **** because I "assumed" it would blutooth my music from my Iphone 4, but I was wrong. Buggar! The Blutooth feature for the phone isn't any real use too me.

So I tried to order the adaptor for it today only to be told there isn't one for the IPH4.
Looks like I will have to dust off the old Ipod and pay a ludicrous amount for the adaptor. PITA.
Nice stereo all the same.

I am getting this unit installed next week. Curious to test it. Seems that there are still a few available via amazon.de (search for becker grand prix if you're interested).

I looked at the same radio when my CR-210 crapped out, but $650 vs $200 to fix mine just didn't seem like a good investment when I don't use the car that much. If you spend a long time behind the wheel, the bluetooth feature would be very cool to have in our cars.

I put one in my car two years ago, and it looks great. I had to buy the extra device for the iphone, which is wired, and so you lose the CD changer. The AM is the issue here, not the FM. It does work, but this is no issue to me, as I don't use AM. Also, the size of the unit is fractionally bigger than the opening in the dash, so it does not sit perfectly flat, one side is about 1-2 mm out. Finally, and most important, you have to alter one wire in the radio harness, if you want sound!. I cannot remember which one it was, but it is on the 993 forum here if you do a search. It was also expensive at about 400 pounds, from the UK. Best Philip PS Eclou wrote the wire fix on 01-11-08. Search for "simple audio upgrade" PPS Although it sounds obvious, the radio has to be on for the phone to use bluetooth, which I find a bit of a pain, as I do not always listen to it.

I have mine installed now. Radio reception for FM is excellent. The overall sound didn't improve significantly over my previous unit but there, the speakers are the limiting factor. I may get around to doing something about them, eventually. I have not tried CD or the phone hookup via bluetooth, yet. For the ipod users, according to the manual the unit can read mp3s from CD-Roms. So maybe you should just copy your mp3s from the ipod on a CD-Rom and be done.
Someone asked me for pictures. Didn't get to do that, yet. Stay tuned.
