Personally, I would buy a new relay, install the new relay and leave your old one as the spare.
I was wondering about this...I looked online for DME relays, and came across the 993 part number. The relay in my '97 is a 944 part number, so I was gonna try to get the same number. But if the 993 number is the new version of the same relay, then I will probably go with that...in fact that may be the only one available...really haven't looked that much at this point.

The 993 is the new part number...and relay. It is about a half-inch taller than the 944 relay.

So it was also in my '95.

I'm pretty sure it's been a 993. part number for quite a few years which would lead me to believe your 944. relay is original (my '97 had a 944. in it too when I bought it). If it were me I would buy 2 new relays, install one of them and save the 2nd as the spare. That's what I did on mine.

YMMV

Easy enough to determine; there is a date code on the cover. On mine 210295...

Buying two new DME relays is overkill. I simply re-soldered mine. Its back in my car working fine and I put my new spare one back in the box. Maybe I ought to pull the cover on my new DME relay to check if they learned how to solder since.

If the DME relay doesn't solve the issue, you may need to examine your fuel pump. Granted the mileage on your car seems low for a fuel pump failure, but I just went through this with my 993.
