Does anyone know where I can get this Hazet tool for the front strut removal? I checked everywhere and it seems not to be available.

I had the same problem. I'd recomend that you invest in a Dremel tool. One of the most handy tools to have around. Then go and buy the extra long socket pieces and cut out the hole. This is what I did. Worked perfectly. Sockets only cost around $15 dollars. I believe the Hazet tool is pretty expensive.

Hmm If I remember right I went to the local auto zone. they had an o2 sensor removal socket kit that was I believe free for rental.. They put the cost of the kit on your CC to secure the value of it. Then you can return the kit and get your money back. If I remember right I used one of the sockets out of the kit and it fit. The o2 sockets looked very similar to the hazet socket you pictured.

Yep, O2 sensor socket will work. Just be sure it's not one of the ones with the really narrow groove. Needs to have a big enough cut-out.

Supposedly a Matra 3186 replaces the Hazet 2593...still $50. For less that $10, you make your own.

If you don't have access to an impact, just grind two flats onto a Craftsmen long socket, hold with a adjustable wrench, and use an allen inside of the socket. Worked like a charm on my BMW E36 M3. But on the 993 I disassembled by holding the shock shaft with vise grips (stock struts aren't worth crap so who cares about marring the metal) and using a socket on the nut. When I dissasemble my Bilsteins, all I needed to use was an impact. Didn't have one during my first suspension change but would have worked well.

Thanks everyone.

Is the special socket tool just for removal of the Monroes or do I need it also for reassembly of the new PSS10s? I'm am looking going the direction of fabricating one on my own. Seems like the simplest cost effective solution.

I needed two with the Bilstein HD install - removal I think is 19 and the Bilstein needed 21 - something like that. Why don't you ask someone who has done the DIY and is close to where you live to send them to you in the post - and then mail back to them. Once you've used the sockets - you don't really use them again.

The Monroes are 21mm, but I don't know what the PSS10 are. I didn't want to be presumptuous and I figured that if someone wanted to offer they would do so. I don't mind trying to fabricate them myself albeit I don't know what size the PSS10 requires. The 'intheAir' DIY says 19mm for the HD Bilstein.

Are you going to reuse the upper mounts or need anything of the old set-up? Before I decided to have my shop change out the suspension I was just planning to pull the fronts out as a unit. But I was putting in some TRG Camber mounts and picked up an extra set of upper spring keepers so I did not need to recycle any pieces parts.

You can get an equivalent tool from Samstag Sales, they list the MATRA 3186 as equivalent to the Hazet socket you're looking for. I have ordered specialty tools and various Hazet from them before and have had no problems. http://www.samstagsales.com/vwaudi2.htm#suspension
