Default WTB: Battery

Been having some starter issues, but also discovered that I have 5+ year old Optima battery. Started to look for a replacement, but seems that even Optima web site no longer shows options for Porsche.

What are the current recommendations for replacement. Want to keep it light weight, but this is a daily driver, with 5-8 AX days and maybe 1-2 track days.

The Odyssey 925 is a great battery, but you need to use a charger that is approved and listed by Schumacher, the manufacturer. I bought a fan-less one made by Clore and sold on Amazon and other auto parts stores for only $75. It's approved by Schumacher. If you use the wrong charger, you run the risk of prematurely killing the battery. Some of the smaller ACI chargers sold by West Coast Batteries (note that the URL is http://www.odysseybatteries.com/, but this is not official Schumacher website) are NOT approved. The Odyssey Ultimizer chargers made by Schumacher and sold by West Coast are super-nice, but they have a fan that is annoyingly loud, IMHO.

I have an Interstate MTP-91 in my Turbo.

http://www.interstatebatteries.com/c...360-2147384748

Just bought a DuraLast Gold (Autozone) for the Boxster on Sunday. The OEM battery lasted me 5-1/2 years. And I still replaced it early based on the report from the auto parts store.

Both cars are always on the Porsche Maintainer when not being driven.

Stick with the interstate. Save weight elsewhere. My Odyssey 925 died on me on the interstate back from a track event. Try finding a battery in the middle of Illinois on a Sunday. Odyssey would not cover it as they feel the alternators in our cars are notoriously unreliable and subject the battery to overcharging. They needed me to have a dealership prove my alternator was working properly which would have cost more than a replacement battery. I'd prioritize reliability and low maintenance over any performance gain on this one.

Interstate - I have had one running strong for 7 years in my car.
I should probably think about replacing it

DieHard International in mine. Not light, but I never worry about it failing. Besides, I focus on taking the weight off the rear of the car as much as possible. Think of the battery as balancing ballast.

Die Hard International was in my car when I bought it. With receipt from a previous owner. Failed within a year of purchase. Sears refused to replace it to a non-original purchaser. Based on that Sears can keep their batteries, they have lost this customer. On top of that, I believe that their batteries that used to be made by Interstate and then Exide are made by someone else now.

Interstate - excellent batteries. Not many know, but "blems" can be purchased for $30 from local distributors. Blems are fresh batteries that usually have the label ripped or removed. year replacement warranty. I've had many on many cars, excellent product, especially for the price. There are two local distributors in Boston area. I much prefer one in Woburn for numerous reasons.

My current 993 has a $76 battery from BJ's Wholesale. I believe it's made by Exide and has a long warranty. Needed a replacement in a pinch, this was cheap and available when Interstate distributor was already closed in the evening.

I use CarQuest batteries - they are made by East Penn. I would recommend the AGM version, which is more expensive, but you cannot go wrong with East Penn. I have them in both my cars.

My Sears Diehard will be 10 years old in February...it always stays on a deltran maintainer when not being driven. As a test, I recently let it sit off the maintainer for for 3 weeks...it started right up. So I recommend a Sears Diehard battery.

+1 for Interstate..... and never worry about it.

I purchased the Interstate Mega-Tron Plus battery MTP-91 (85 month warranty) battery in January for $130. My prior Interstate battery lasted 9 years, without a battery maintainer.

Interstate MTP-91 was 8 years old when I replaced it as a precaution. It was starting the car, but didn't want it to fail at an inopportune time. Perfect fit. Sold by local tire dealer all shrink wrapped and for something like $115.

+1 on the Interstate MTP-91; got mine from local tire shop as well just last week for $115 + tax; I had been using mine for 7+ years but replaced it as a precaution; when I finally did replace it, I noticed that the PO never had the vent tube attached, so be sure to ask for the vent tube kit if you don't already have one. The new battery also has an 84-month warranty whereas the old one only had a 72 month warranty.
