Let me rephrase that, Awd safer than rwd, especially when a lot of the weight is behind the rear axel. Is that better? I know very well the car's rear can still wag (was at willow springs two weeks ago and experienced it first hand, twice).

Default AWD VS 2 WD

In my experience, an AWD car down on HP such as Carrera 4S, under steer and push like a pig. I hate understeer. Once the car is understeering, the only way I know to make the corner is to back off the throttle, me no likey. Once off the throttle, inevitably, someone passes me...I know this because I too was an understeeringaholic...UNTIL, I set the car up better.

I now have:
TRG 25mm front bars, 1 slot off of full soft
TRG 22mm rear bars, full soft
Tarrett drop links
LSD rebuilt by Guard with 4 clutches

I run NT-01 tires, 245/40/18 fronts and 275/35/18 rears....the cars handles like a dream...the big fast sweepers such as California Speedway, and infield tight stuff.

Why do I run the bars so soft? Because the TRG bars are just to big from the get go...but they are cheap, 1/2 the price of 993RS bars...but maybe not, if all things are considered.

About 8 years ago, as I recall, I paid about $600 for the TRG sways, another $300 or so for the Tarrett drop links. The TRG rear drop (banana) links are a joke, bought them and trashed them later; they didn't fit, couldn't get the full range of adjustment. Didn't have the heart to re-sell them to another Rennlister.

For a few bucks more, I should have bought the factory 993RS bars...they come with drop links...were about $1,200 a set at the time...probably close to $2,000 now.

Bottom line, and I am sure Ken, Gasser and others will agree, it's all about weight reduction...and unfortunately, the 993 car is just bloody heavy...it is tough to get weight out of this car, if you keep it mostly all steel.

If you have a 282HP 993, it costs a bloody fortune to get it to 300HP. So adding HP is not really an option, taking weight out is the way to go....but it ain't easy, or cheap!

In conclusion, the 993 when set up to your preferences such as mine is, is a dream to drive, an absolute dream, and reliable as hell at the same time, a difficult combination to achieve.

^^ This issue has generated a TON on controversy/arguments on the TT board. Do a search there if you're interested. FWIW, I converted mine last year, 'cos I knew a GT2 Clubsport clone was in my future (now virtually done) and the AWD just didn't fit the picture.

i think its just a matter of preference. i always prefer rwd and think its "cool" to oversteer but after what happened to my s2k, i think twice now. same can we said about traction control and other electronic nannies. we would all like to think we can drive like the stig and dont need TC, ABS, and can swing the rear around corners but that takes years and hrs of practice (i'm am far away from that).

as for the weight and hp, i think my car puts out decent hp. i'm still trying to find out if this car has a 3.8 engine mod. based on the seat of the pants feeling (LOL), i dont think its too far off from my e92 m3 in terms of acceleration. definitely spins up faster with the LWF.

Most folks pick them up from Appbiz (http://appbiz.com/). I haven't done so myself, I went the no carpet route

Seats 100lbs (add back 30lbs for race seats)
AC compressor and lines - 22lbs
Mufflers & cats - 54lbs

Then its down to 1 million piddly little things

Last time I weighted my car was at Moroso in 2003 but that should still be pretty close to what it is today was 2800 lbs. But it was with near empty tank, I think about 5 gallons.

I've changed some, for example took the roll bar out and added full cage.

Now the weight should be about 2920 lbs with FULL tank.

Items removed:

-Engine tray
-Spare tire
-Compressor, tools etc.
-Rear wiper (and everything related)
-Rear Seats
-Trunk carpet
-Air bags
-Rear interior (everything that's there)
Sound deadening (inside and in engine compartment)
-Seat belts (but added 6 point belts for front)
-Bumperettes
-3rd brake light
-BUnch of small crap

Items changed or modified to make them lighter:
-Whole exhaust (took everything out and put back headers, race cats and no mufflers.
-Battery
-Steering wheel
-Bumper bars
-Rear bumper
-Door panels (from OEM Hifi to RS)
-Seats (from Sport Seats to buckets)
-Heater (including the heating tubes etc.
-Washer fluid bottle (stock out, RS in)
-Front hood shocks

Total weight loss should be about 270 lbs and that includes for example adding a cage which is about 100 lbs.

There must be something else but can't remember...

Losing weight makes a difference for sure.

flying finn, how does the car sound with header to cat and no exhaust? is it louder with header to muffler setup (if you ever ran it that way)?

Na, just a bunch of photos on Photobucket. Yes, I did all the body work myself. the fast bits were all done by Cervelli. She turns a good lap when I have time to make it to a track...

It sounds great (even though it's me saying so)...

It's not bad at all when pu$$yfooting around but when WOT, it screams like a banshee!

Much higher pitch than stock 993, or 993 with any kind of mufflers/cats/bybass etc. I've ever heard.
The reason for that is right pipe diameter (lot of stuff out there has IMO too large diam., equal length headers and exhaust gases "criss-crossing" after cats.

I used to have stock, then stock headers & cat with supercups, then stock headers with cat by-pass & supercups...

On track, I liked the cat by-pass & supercups and it was ok also on street but I didn't like the V8 "rumble" you get with that, noise itself didn't bother me, it was that "rumble" I wanted to get rid of.

Now with headers, race cats and no mufflers I'm really happy with it and everyone comments how different & cool it sounds.

Below a clip to give you an idea although it really doesn't do justice though since it's not under load.
(not to mention the tool who shot it was like 100 yards away...)
